Storing cupcakes.

I'm making cupcakes for our Christmas dinner desert, I was wondering which is better, making them Christmas eve and then storing them, or make them Christmas morning then store them?

Also, which way is best to store cupcakes, fridge? or out in the open?

If it makes a difference, The icing will be cream cheese icing.
