Finally went to see HP7.1 last night.
...wow that was a weirdly paced movie, what with the lovingly lingering on some scenes (hi, Death Eater banquet of isn't-Voldie-creepy) and just totally leaving out some stuff that I, personally, thought was sort of important to little things like Harry's character (like his need to get over his reliance on his wand, and his decision on Hallows vs Horcuxes). Plus decisions regarding camera work that felt cheap to me (handheld must mean drama, right?). But that Deathly Hallows shadowpuppet sequence was pretty cool.
Facile nitpickery aside, it really does bother me when things are changed to make them more movie-dramatic, in a way that then makes the scene stupid. Exhibit A: when the Snatchers are chasing them through the woods instead of the kids, say, apparating away. Exhibit B: when despite having ALL THE WANDS and no pressure, they apparate out of Malfoy Manor before setting everyone on fire (and Bellatrix twice). As the Male pointed out in bafflement, are they here to run away or actually score some damn points?
A little something for everyone in the major 'shipping stakes, what with the random dancing and the Harry and Draco knee-to-knee and staring into each other's eyes. Hey, sure, I'm cheap; and when it comes to book 7, I take everything I can get.
I do really, really like that it took a moment to show us the bravest thing Hermione has ever done, instead of having it as a throwaway mention.
But in general, it just really didn't fill me with mad enthusiasm. I don't think it was particularly excellently made, and the pacing was all over the place for me - the things it chose to linger on felt way overdone to me, and I'm including everything Dobby-related, with a bullet. Good performances more or less across the board, but a lot of the lines just sort of sat there like they were beads on a necklace, not a single whole scene. It serves the purpose though, I guess.
