Progress notes 04-04-12

Yesterday was a crap day because though the dogs the day before were off lead and went right to the SUV to go out, yesterday did not. I actually had to drive down the road to get them. So needless to say, back to work for recalls and no more off lead time together.

I say together because Shi is much easier to call back alone; she gets Ri chasing her and all she does is go. Alone, she at least "thinks" about it before coming back. So my job now is to get her to that point where she doesn't think, she just comes.

So today, since Ri ate her leash, I've let them outside one at a time. Ri I left alone outside for a bit then brought in and put Shi out. While she was out we worked with "get it" and "Bring it to me". Trying to figure out how to get it so he brings a toy right to me. He won't mouth it if I'm holding it so tossing it is all I can do; too close he won't go after it, too far he drops it early. After a little of this we ended with sits and a "watch me" which he now knows perfectly so it ended well.

Then he started pacing and whining because Shi was outside and he was inside.

So I kenneled him and went outside to work Shila. She was super excited I came outside (she'd been barking for attention which didn't help Ri's pacing any) so I used that to work with her. Got her sitting, watching me, waiting, recalls, and then engagement work.

Then I let her off lead.

As I said, she'll go but when I call her she stops to "think" about it before coming. So that's something we need to work on. It's one thing to have her wait and come directly to me, another for her to be wandering around with things to smell and see and then coming back. So I need a new lunge line/lead so I can work with her when not stationary but walking around.

We're also working on heeling, sitting at heel and front sits. The thing I like is she is instantly looking at me now when she sits, so now it's to get her to look at me when walking in heel instead of sniff the ground. And when she sits in front, she's at an angle to me, so I'm luring her into a straight sit.

I would REALLY like to get her to the point of making an attempt for her CGC but we're still a ways from that yet.

For them to get their CCGC (Canadian Canine Good Citizen), they both need to:

Test Number 1 - Accepting a friendly stranger: Owner shakes hands with a friendly stranger. This test displays a dog’s acceptance of unfamiliar adults and children.

Test Number 2 - Patiently sitting for petting: A test for shyness and defence of personal space.

Test Number 3 - Appearance and grooming: Reveals owner’s care and sense of responsibility for their dog.

Test Number 4 - Out for a walk: Illustrates handler’s control of his or her dog.

Test Number 5 - Walking through a crowd: Demonstrates that the dog moves around in a crowd without being unduly distressed and is under handler control.

Test Number 6 - Response to commands “sit”, “down”, “stay” and “come”: This exercise exhibits that the dog is trained and responds well to its handler/owner.

Test Number 7 - Praise/Interaction: Shows the dog’s relationship with its owner and that the dog can be calmed down easily.

Test Number 8 - Reaction to passing dogs: Demonstrates that the dog behaves politely around other dogs.

Test Number 9 - Distractions: Illustrates that the dog is confident when faced with common distractions.

Test Number 10 - Supervised isolation: Reveals that the dog can be left with someone other than its usual handler and will maintain its training and good manners.

For the Canadian Canine Good Neighbor test, there's twelve things they need to do. They are:

TEST 1 - Accepting A Friendly Stranger

TEST 2 - Politely Accepts Petting

TEST 3 - Appearance and Grooming

TEST 4 - Out For A Walk

TEST 5 - Walking Through A Crowd

TEST 6 - Sit/Down On Command and Stay In Place

TEST 7 - Come When Called

TEST 8 - Praise/Interaction

TEST 9 - Reaction To A Passing Dog

TEST 10 - Reaction To Distractions

TEST 11 - Supervised Isolation

TEST 12 - Walking Through A Door/Gate

Yeah, LOTS of stuff yet to work on, but they're still young and we've got time to get it right.
