[Faith] That's Gonna Bruise fikgirl September 2 2006, 17:22:01 UTC
(From now on, I will wear a seatbelt,) was the only coherent thought that Faith could summon as George predictably swerved the car to avoid the giant walking pork buffet. Unfortunately, avoiding the boar sent them careening right toward a gathering of trees which probably weren't going any nicer to their vehicle than the boar.

"George!" Faith exclaimed. She reached over, grabbing the steering wheel and rapidly turning it in the opposite direction. That didn't work well, considering that they'd now managed to hit a few fallen logs and the vehicle bounced and bumped, they bounced and bumped and banged around.

(That's gonna leave a bruise.)

"Let go! I got it!" George yelled. Right before the jeep darted under a large low-hanging branch. They both ducked, but still managed to get slapped on the head with Mother Nature's Fronds.

"Slow down, some of us aren't dead yet!"

"Yeah, yeah--keep your shirt on!" George said. "Really," she added and laughed at her own joke.

The jeep tilted perilously as the right side tires rolled over a large mass of roots, then bounced as it leveled out again. George had eased off the gas pedal a little in all the excitement. She stamped on it again.

The jeep wheezed back to its top speed again. Angry grunts and squeals behind them caught George's attention. She glanced over her shoulder. The boar was running along behind them tossing its head and displaying wickedly curved tusks. Faith was half-turned in her seat, watching the boar also.

"Not exactly a T Rex, is it?" she asked.

"Only in attitude," George said. The boar chased them a little farther than slowed to a halt and glared at them until jungle foliage and twists in the path hid it from sight.

George drove on in silence for a minute. "Well, that was fun," she said at last.

"Ah, I see. You're using that new definition of fun. The one with a capital F-U," Faith laughed. She propped her feet up on the dashboard, happy to have escaped with only a few bruises that Slayer healing would take care of quickly and easily enough.

"So, whaddya think?" Faith asked.

George looked at her. "About what?"

"All of it. That place where they were holding them, those doctors or whatever the hell they are that we got locked up. What do you think they were doing? Why they were doing it?"

She learned about The Initiative long after the fact, because Angel had found out about it after the fact. A military group trying to create their own army of super monsters was nothing to sneeze at. Faith had only heard rumors - bits and pieces - of what had happened to the women, to her friends, and it pissed her off ( ... )

George didn't answer right away. She thought about it while she drove. "Grim Reapers...aren't supposed to kill anybody," she said finally.

"They're--we're--supposed to stay on the fringes, observing but never getting involved. Watch people die, take the souls, move on. Good, bad, right or wrong--doesn't matter."

She thought about it some more. "What Daisy did--what I did, 'fessing up to everybody--Rube would have a fit about it. Or maybe not. It's not like they didn't know all about us before we ever got on the fucking plane."

George shrugged. "What were they doing? Playing God. Why? 'Cause they can. Fucked up power games. If they weren't doing this, they'd be doing something else equally twisted. Cloning Hitler in South America or some shit."

She glanced at Faith and grinned conspiratorially. "All I know for sure is, they need their asses kicked in a big way. And we're just the people who can do it."
