George started the jeep with an unsatisfying whir. Stupid electric car. It didn't have a lot of Get Up And Go, either, as she discovered when she stomped on the accelerator and the jeep failed to leap forward. It just sort of eased into motion.
"Geez, this thing isn't much of a jeep," George groused.
"You could always walk, if it's so disappointing," Faith said.
"It's not that bad," George said promptly. She whipped around the corner of the building--it was beginning to build up a respectable head of steam now--and saw Jon step into her path. George slapped the center of the steering wheel, but the horn--if there was one--didn't work.
Jon spotted her about the same time and leaped back out of the way as George swerved around him and kept going. George waved gaily as she roared--okay, whirred sedately--past. She heard Jon ask May, who was behind him, where she'd gotten her license. George threw a one finger salute over her shoulder--then grabbed hold of the wheel with both hands when the jeep jounced over a large root.
The trip looked to be a rough one. It wasn't like there was road to follow, after all. But George didn't intend to go slow if she could help it. She kept the accelerator pedal jammed to the floor. What was the point of a car if you couldn't move faster than you could walk?
After bouncing through the jungle for a few minutes, Faith ducked another low-hanging branch, sat up and said, "You'd do well in Boston."
"Huh?" George said.
"Boston drivers are notorious," Faith said. "Aggressive. Hostile. Unrelenting. Turn signals are considered a sign of weakness. It's like giving information to the enemy."
"Heh. Sounds like my kind of town," George said. "Mason always used to complain about my driving. 'Immortality not withstanding, Georgie,'" George said in a fairly good imitation of Mason's accent, "That's no way to drive a car'." Pussy."
"Boar," Faith said.
"What?"
"Boar!" Faith said more urgently, pointing at the huge wild pig which had wandered out into their path.
