"Ah, I see. You're using that new definition of fun. The one with a capital F-U," Faith laughed. She propped her feet up on the dashboard, happy to have escaped with only a few bruises that Slayer healing would take care of quickly and easily enough.
"So, whaddya think?" Faith asked.
George looked at her. "About what?"
"All of it. That place where they were holding them, those doctors or whatever the hell they are that we got locked up. What do you think they were doing? Why they were doing it?"
She learned about The Initiative long after the fact, because Angel had found out about it after the fact. A military group trying to create their own army of super monsters was nothing to sneeze at. Faith had only heard rumors - bits and pieces - of what had happened to the women, to her friends, and it pissed her off.
"You know," Faith continued without waiting for George to answer, "I used to see demons and evil shit all the time. But you expect demons to be evil. But people . . . people aren't supposed to be that evil or that soulless. Slayers aren't supposed to kill people, but I kinda gotta wonder at which point a person ain't human anymore."

George didn't answer right away. She thought about it while she drove. "Grim Reapers...aren't supposed to kill anybody," she said finally.
"They're--we're--supposed to stay on the fringes, observing but never getting involved. Watch people die, take the souls, move on. Good, bad, right or wrong--doesn't matter."
She thought about it some more. "What Daisy did--what I did, 'fessing up to everybody--Rube would have a fit about it. Or maybe not. It's not like they didn't know all about us before we ever got on the fucking plane."
George shrugged. "What were they doing? Playing God. Why? 'Cause they can. Fucked up power games. If they weren't doing this, they'd be doing something else equally twisted. Cloning Hitler in South America or some shit."
She glanced at Faith and grinned conspiratorially. "All I know for sure is, they need their asses kicked in a big way. And we're just the people who can do it."

"Hell yeah!" Faith shouted her agreement out. "A serious ass-kicking for those sons-of-bitches is exactly what the doctor ordered."
Of course, their boyfriends would likely get a go at them first, but Faith was willing to wait. Normally she didn't take sloppy seconds, but in this instance she wouldn't mind being on the finishing up crew.
"It is scary to think that they know so much," Faith admitted. "But, gotta wonder, where did they get thier intel? I mean, near as I can tell, they're only evil punk ass scientists. And they got themselves caught. The real Big Bads, they never do that. It takes blood, sweat and tears, and sometimes big losses for the white hats when taking down a true Big Bad, you know?"
"And you'd know, right?" George asked.
Unconsciously, Faith rubbed the scar on her abdomen beneath her shirt. The one left when Buffy tried to gut her. Faith got over being bitter; she'd all but asked for it, but it was a haunting reminder of when she walked on the other side of that line. When she could have been one of the people poking and prodding and threatening Ami, Claire, Daisy and Rose. It wasn't a happy realization.
"Yeah, I'd know," Faith said quietly. "I just think that something bigger is out there. Something -- or someone -- we haven't met yet."

"Well, that's a charming thought," George said. Not that she disagreed. There had to be someone or something higher on the food chain than the clowns they'd captured. As far as anyone knew these people had no way off the island either--at least, no evidence of one had been found.
So they were pawns. But pawns had to be given their marching orders by someone, and that someone had to communicate with them. George felt pretty confident that the "white hats" would take them down eventually. She told Faith so.
"I suspect we're not done being surprised. I thought I'd discovered the full truth when I met Rube and became a Grim Reaper. Then I found out about the immortals. Then I wound up here. And the surprises just keep coming! Why should they stop now?"
George braked abruptly, then backed up. "Hey, we're here! Our first stop." She gestured at the clearing and the control panel which protruded from a fake tree. "Time to rescue Ash from solitary confinement."
"So, whaddya think?" Faith asked.
