Chapter 3 Kazuya rested his head on Jin’s chest which was warmed up by the younger man’s body heat. He listened to Jin’s slow heartbeat; it was so slow that instead of being comforting, Kazuya became anxious to hear the next. Waiting for the silent beat, Kazuya wondered what he’d do if it never came. It was scary to think that he who’d always been so strong and independent and mostly kept to himself was now so dependent on another. The next beat came and Kazuya allowed his body to relax a bit. Everything around him was so changed and all he knew was that he never wanted to be alone in this land of zombies again.
“What are you thinking about?” Jin asked, playing with Kazuya’s hair which was surprisingly clean and soft considering the circumstances.
“Nothing special”, Kazuya sighed and closed his eyes, the warmth of his breath heating up Jin’s skin a bit more.
“How long has it been since we met?”
“I don’t know exactly, possibly a month”, Kazuya replied even though he knew that it was exactly thirty-five days since they met, he just didn’t want Jin to know that he’d counted.
More difficult than to count the days since they met was remembering what they had done those days. They’d been to the store at least two times, since the zombie incident the first time nothing special had happened. Jin had found a deck of cards so they occupied themselves with different card games and they’d found books that they read aloud to each other. Kazuya loved Jin’s voice; it was deep and calming although sometimes it made his heart skip a beat when it got that special, even deeper tone.
That first kiss was the only one they’d shared though even if they often let their hands brush together and looked at each other when they thought the other wouldn’t notice. It was complicated somehow, now that they’d gotten a small taste of each other, they wanted to take it slow although they knew that every new day could be the day they died. If they took things slow then maybe they could create an illusion of everything being normal even if they still could hear silent groans from outside and they slept in the same bed every night.
“What will we do?” Jin asked and Kazuya glanced up at him.
“What do you mean?” Kazuya asked even though he already had an idea of what Jin meant.
“We can’t just stay here forever.”
“I thought that I would stay here as long as the food supplies around here lasted and then I would move on to another place”, Kazuya bit his lip. “That was the only plan I allowed myself to think of but I don’t know where I would move. If I moved out to the countryside there might be fewer zombies and I could find animals and start a small farm or something but it would also give me fewer places to hide. If I went further into town there might be more zombies but more places to hide and maybe even more people who’ve survived.”
“Having a farm would be a more long-lasting plan but only if you could find any surviving farm animals and if you could avoid zombies”, Jin said, frowning.
“I don’t think there is such a thing as long-lasting anymore... unless the zombies finally just wither away and die completely.”
“I’ve seen a lot of zombies that I recognise from before and I even followed one for a couple of weeks and not once did it eat something but it never became weaker either”, Jin sighed. “If there aren’t an army of surviving people that will come and defeat the zombies, I don’t think that they’ll ever disappear.”
“Wow, I feel so much more hopeful now”, Kazuya said sarcastically.
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re just telling the truth, I’m sorry.”
Jin took Kazuya’s hand that rested on his chest and brought it up to his lips, kissing it softly. The younger man looked up at him questioningly and he smiled tenderly, stroking Kazuya’s hair with his free hand.
“We’ll just stay here for as long as we can and then we can go further into town to look for other survivors”, Jin said. “Maybe we can leave after winter, when spring comes and everything becomes warmer.”
“That sounds like a plan”, Kazuya smiled and laid his head down on Jin’s chest again, listening to the slow and faint beats of the older man’s heart. “I wonder what would happen if you really bit someone... Would they become a real zombie or would they be just like you?”
“Let’s not try, okay? I prefer you alive.”
“I didn’t say that I wanted to try, I was just wondering.”
“I thought that you had a serious biting fetish or something”, Jin joked and Kazuya slapped his chest.
Jin grinned dangerously and suddenly Kazuya found himself pinned underneath the larger man and staring up into his eyes. The younger man frowned at Jin’s large grin and tried to push him off which only caused Jin to put more of his weight on him.
“Jin, what are you doing?” Kazuya asked, sighing.
“Well, I was going to tickle you but then I realised that it would probably make you squirm and squirming would create a whole different reaction”, Jin explained and Kazuya rolled his eyes, blushing slightly.
“I thought that you weren’t attracted to me anymore since you haven’t tried to kiss me even once”, Kazuya said, seemingly nonchalant and joking but actually he’d had thoughts about what he really meant to Jin.
“I just thought that you wanted to take it slow, you know... I was waiting for you to kiss me first because we’ve had this sort of awkward tension between us since the first kiss and I thought you’d changed your mind.”
“I’ve let you sleep in the same bed as me and we’ve been touching hands and you kissed my hand earlier. It’s like we’re teenagers who’ve just started dating or something although I don’t think they sleep in the same bed without any inappropriate touching.”
“We’re in an inappropriate position now”, Jin smiled widely. “So are we passed the awkward dating phase now and can I kiss you?”
Kazuya only smiled which Jin took as a yes so he lowered his head and gently brought their lips together. The younger man wrapped his arms around Jin’s neck and opened his mouth slightly, allowing Jin to deepen the kiss. Both of them we’re more experienced kissers than teenagers experiencing their first love but since it had been so long since they kissed anyone else like this, they were eager.
Jin’s torso was already bare as it usually was since Kazuya got used to seeing the zombie bites on his arm. Kazuya had joked about Jin being not only a half zombie but also a half nudist but now he was grateful for the lack of a shirt as he could freely run his hands over the cold and smooth skin of Jin’s back. Usually he wouldn’t think that anything cold was sexy but because it was Jin, he didn’t mind it at all.
“You’re kind of squishing me”, Kazuya said in between kisses and in the next moment they were sitting up and Kazuya was on Jin’s lap. “How do you do stuff like that? I barely even notice that we’re moving before we’re in another position.”
“I’m pretty fast and agile”, Jin said with a leer and Kazuya rolled his eyes.
“Fast is not always a good thing and how can someone so agile be clumsy enough to trip on the edge of a sidewalk?” Kazuya reminded Jin of the sprained ankle that had now healed.
“Oh yeah, I don’t know really... I guess I’m just an idiot like you’ve said.”
“You know what, I don’t even care. Just kiss me now, please.”
Jin wasn’t late to comply and he wrapped his arms tightly around Kazuya’s thin form that had actually become slightly larger since Jin first saw him. He guessed that Kazuya hadn’t had much of an appetite before when he’d always had to be alone but now he ate more. Besides, who wanted to be called a skeleton even if a sexy one?
Later, when they’d finally parted because of Kazuya’s stomach reminding him that he was hungry, Kazuya’s lips felt really swollen but he had what he suspected was a very stupid smile on his face. Jin watched him the whole time he ate, something that he’d found completely creepy before but eventually he’d gotten used to it.
“Canned mushrooms”, Jin said and Kazuya raised an eyebrow. “What you’re eating; is that why you’re smiling so widely? Because you love mushrooms?”
“Shut up”, Kazuya mumbled and Jin chuckled. “Go and take a shower or something instead of staring at me.”
“But you’re much prettier to look at than white tile”, Jin commented. “Besides, I thought that we could shower together when you’re done eating.”
Kazuya almost choked on a mushroom but managed to swallow it before he turned blue, “We are so not going to shower together.”
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t want to and cold showers aren’t sexy at all anyway.”
“Fine”, Jin sighed. “I just thought that you’d feel warmer if you had company.”
“You’re cold, you would only make me feel colder”, Kazuya pointed out.
“You know what I mean.”
“Just because we kissed it doesn’t mean that I’m ready to go any further yet.”
There was silence for awhile and Kazuya continued eating mushrooms one by one from the can and Jin sat on the bed, watching him with a thoughtful expression. Kazuya tried not to look at the older man but from time to time their gazes would lock and then he’d quickly look away.
“Have you ever had a relationship with another man before?” Jin asked and Kazuya almost choked yet again.
“Uh”, Kazuya stared intensely at a mushroom he’d pierced on the fork. “Actually, no I haven’t”, he admitted finally.
Jin nodded and leaned back against the wall, “I thought so”, he said. “It’s okay, I won’t pressure you anymore. I just got a little too excited.”
“Now you’re probably thinking that I’m just a straight man who would’ve confessed to liking anyone I first met after my isolation”, Kazuya smiled bitterly and wouldn’t look at Jin. “Man or woman, young or old.”
“I didn’t think that at all”, Jin smiled gently when Kazuya dared to look at him. “I think that you’ve liked guys before me and probably girls too but girls were the only ones you would give a chance. Not everyone accepts people who are different and it’s easier to adapt to society completely if you have that option.”
“So you don’t judge me for not being as gay as you?”
Jin laughed, “That would be a stupid thing to judge someone for. I’ve been judged a lot for my straightforwardness and I’ve even been judged by people I’ve been in a relationship with for going into things too deeply too fast. I always kind of wanted to fall in love and then everything would happen at once; kissing, sex, marriage.”
“But homosexuals aren’t allowed to get married here”, Kazuya said and Jin shrugged.
“I guess I’m not as gay as you think either”, he smiled. “I had a girlfriend before, I kind of forced myself to and then I wanted to get settled and have kids right away but she wasn’t as happy about that idea as I was. Because of this country’s laws, I couldn’t get married to and have kids with a person I loved so I tried to do it in a traditional way but she rejected me.”
“I don’t think anyone is fond of the idea of being a replacement for anyone else”, Kazuya said and Jin nodded. “Why did you tell me this?”
“I guess I just want you to know me”, Jin smiled and Kazuya continued eating his mushrooms while silence spread through the room.

A/N: Yo guys, I'm back! It was sooo weird writing this, totally strange trying to get back into it and I don't think I even succeeded... Not only is Swedish a different language, it also has a very different rythm and style in writing than English so now I'm all confused. XD
Also, I realise that this chapter isn't interesting at all. -_-' I'll try to bring the action back in the next chapter. Some more really exciting things are revealed in this chapter though, try to find them!
