Summary: The whole world is overrun by monsters that Kazuya never thought would ever be real. Now Kazuya is struggling to survive on his own until one night when he meets Jin who is more special than anyone he's ever met. This is the story of their will to survive against all odds.
Chapter 1 |
Kazuya woke up and immediately realised that he wasn’t dead then he rolled his eyes at himself, of course he wasn’t. Sunlight trickled through the crack by the window and created a dim light in the room. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and got out of the bed, crawling towards his backpack to inspect what food he’d managed to grab. Sighing at seeing the usual beans and other disgusting canned food, he really wished that he’d be able to eat fresh food again. His stomach gurgled so he used his can opener to open a can of white beans in tomato sauce and poured some of the content directly into his mouth.
“That looks... disgusting.”
Kazuya started and quickly looked towards the door opening, sighing in relief when he saw Jin. For a moment he’d actually forgotten about the other man being there.
“It is disgusting”, Kazuya replied with a wry smile.
“I’m so glad that I don’t have to eat as often anymore”, Jin sat down next to Kazuya. “I used to love food before all of this happened but now there’s not much of the good food left.”
“I miss those first days when I could still find fresh vegetables and lunchboxes and stuff”, Kazuya poured another mouthful of beans into his mouth and chewed, shuddering in disgust. “I’ve never liked tomatoes and now I have to practically drink tomato sauce.”
“That’s what you don’t like?” Jin said incredulously. “The tomato sauce? I thought that it was the beans.”
“I have no problems with beans actually.”
“You’re so strange.”
“And that’s said by a half zombie.”
“I get your point.”
They stayed silent while Kazuya ate the rest of the beans in the can and then threw it in a large garbage bag in one corner of the room. He sighed again and closed his eyes, thinking about his life before the zombies and how much he missed it.
“Are you okay?” Jin asked softly and Kazuya opened his eyes again to look at him.
“I was just thinking about the past”, Kazuya answered. “It feels like so long ago and yet it feels like it was just yesterday.”
“I understand what you mean... Everything changed so quickly that it’s difficult to process it properly.”
“What was your life like?”
“I lived in a small apartment in the city together with my dog”, Jin said and stared at the boarded up window. “I had a normal job at an office and at the weekends I often went clubbing with friends. It was a really normal life but I loved it.”
“That sounds really nice”, Kazuya said longingly. “I also lived in the city together with my dog and I worked at a clothing store. At the weekends I would just stay home or go to visit my parents or one of my brothers.”
“I had one brother; how many did you have?”
“Three, I also had a niece... I don’t know what happened to them, I tried to look for them at first but I couldn’t find them. This is actually my second oldest brother’s house.”
“Oh, I’m... sorry.”
“It’s okay”, Kazuya smiled weakly. “I think I’ve gotten a bit used to the fact that I’ve lost everyone I’ve ever loved.”
“Can you ever get used to it?” Jin asked. “I know I haven’t.”
“No, I guess you can’t.”
Silence wrapped around them like a choking blanket as they looked at the dust swirling around in the beam of sunshine. Kazuya had gotten used to silence during the months he’d been alone but now when Jin sat next to him, it felt so wrong. He tried to find something to say but he couldn’t think of anything. A lump formed in his throat and he blinked repeatedly not to start crying. He hadn’t cried since the infection had begun and he didn’t intend to do so now either. He’d never liked showing any weakness in front of others and he didn’t even really know Jin yet.
“I could kill for a TV right about now”, Jin said and broke the silence which made it easier for Kazuya to get a grip of himself.
“There is a TV downstairs but there’s no electricity”, he said. “Isn’t it strange how there’s still water in the taps? I thought that everything was supposed to stop working when an apocalypse came.”
“Maybe there’s some higher power making sure that the water lines are still working”, Jin grinned. “It’s like it’s saying that it wants to kill us all with a zombie infection but for those who stay human for a longer time there better be a water supply to keep them alive long enough for them to be eaten by zombies.”
“Your sense of humour is highly inappropriate, you know.”
“Yes, I am aware of that but come on, it’s funny.”
“Maybe just a little bit”, Kazuya smiled. “Maybe I should take a quick shower, I always feel extra dirty when I’ve been outside... especially when I have to kill zombies, blood splatters don’t match my complexion that well.”
“Your sense of humour is highly inappropriate”, Jin said, grinning widely. “Well, you don’t smell badly so I don’t think it’s necessary for you to take a shower if you don’t want to.”
Kazuya leaned towards Jin and sniffed the air around him, “You do smell a bit though so you should shower and for goodness sake, please wear more clothes.”
“Why? Does my incredibly sexy body distract you?”
“You have an arm full of zombie bites, I wouldn’t call that sexy.”
“I see your point”, Jin said. “I’m sorry if it disturbs you.”
“It’s fine”, Kazuya said. “Just take a shower and wear a sweater.”
Jin went to the bathroom and Kazuya was left alone to think. He thought about how easy it was to talk to Jin and how smoothly their banter flowed. Kazuya had never been very good at making friends but with Jin it felt so natural. He wondered if Jin had always had the ability to make people feel comfortable or if it just felt that way since it had been so long since Kazuya had had someone to talk to. At least time flowed quicker when he had someone to talk to other than himself. Kazuya did not enjoy his own company anymore.
When Jin came back from the bathroom, Kazuya was sitting on the bed with his back leaning against the wall. He was staring blankly in front of him and almost seemed like he’d become catatonic. Jin carefully approached him and sat down next to him, their shoulders brushing against each other. The taller man was now wearing a black sweatshirt but he hadn’t zipped it up so part of his torso was still bare.
“You smell better now”, Kazuya said after a few seconds of silence.
“Good, otherwise I would’ve sued the shower”, Jin said.
“That wasn’t funny.”
“I know, sorry.”
Kazuya bit his lip not to start laughing anyway and Jin looked at him amusedly. Then Kazuya turned his head to look at Jin and their faces came very close to each other.
“You have pretty eyelashes”, Kazuya commented and Jin chuckled.
“Thank you, yours aren’t bad either”, he replied. “We keep ending up very close to each other in the physical sense.”
“Maybe I’m just desperate.”
“Well, I’m not because I can go and hook up with any zombie I like, it’s not like they protest.”
“Stop being so disgusting”, Kazuya grimaced.
“Gee, thanks”, Jin replied.
“You know what I mean”, Kazuya rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, that was a really tasteless joke”, Jin admitted. “Sorry about that... I keep putting my foot in my mouth.”
“You have to fight that cannibalistic urge.”
“Wow, very funny.”
They grinned at each other and bumped each other with their shoulders. Somehow it ended up in a tickle fight until Jin managed to twist his already sprained ankle and collapsed on the bed, staring up at the ceiling.
“Ouch”, he pouted. “I forgot about it being hurt.”
“Do you want me to wrap it with bandages?” Kazuya asked worriedly.
“Nah, better save the bandages in case something worse happens.”
“You’re hogging my bed.”
“It’s big enough for us both”, Jin said and pulled Kazuya down on top of himself.
“You’re insane”, Kazuya said but he had to smile.
“How so?”
“You keep flirting with me even though we just met a few hours ago.”
“Maybe the survival of the race depends on us”, Jin joked.
“Then we’re screwed because of the fact that we’re both male and you’re a half zombie”, Kazuya grinned. “I think it’s dinnertime.”
Kazuya rolled off Jin and scrambled to his feet, grabbing the backpack to see what to eat for dinner.
“Can I have some?” Jin asked. “I don’t have to eat very often but I’m actually feeling a bit hungry now, I was on my way to grab some food when I met you.”
“I’m still so happy that I wasn’t what you intended to eat... okay, that just sounded so wrong so let’s ignore it. What do you want to eat?”
“Do you have any candy bars?”
Kazuya raised an eyebrow, “That’s not very healthy.”
“I’m half dead anyway so it doesn’t really matter”, Jin said and Kazuya gave him a chocolate bar. “Thank you.”
“The more chocolate you eat, the less there is for me and I won’t become fat.”
“You couldn’t become fat even if you tried; you’re like a walking skeleton.”
“Thanks, that’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me”, Kazuya said sarcastically.
“If it’s any comfort, you’re a sexy skeleton”, Jin said and Kazuya rolled his eyes, stuffing his mouth full of ravioli. “Okay, I promise that I’ll stop flirting with you, it’s just that it’s sort of in my nature and you would be my type even before the apocalypse.”
“It’s fine... and uh, thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
Jin finished the chocolate bar and stayed silent, waiting for Kazuya to finish the can of ravioli. Not being able to talk to someone for so long seemed to have made Jin even more socially awkward than he had been before. He’d always been popular but he did have a tendency to say exactly what he was thinking at any given moment and his thoughts were mostly centred around three things; food, love and soccer, not necessarily in that order. If there was something he wanted, he would strive to get it in his stupidly straightforward way and sometimes that meant that he moved too fast for other’s comfort. He didn’t even know if Kazuya was remotely interested in guys but he didn’t seem to think that homosexuality was disgusting and that was always something.
“It’s so strange to see someone who is even half a zombie being deep in thought”, Kazuya commented and Jin snapped out of his thoughts.
“Perhaps you have to get used to it”, he said.
“Hmm, I don’t think I’ll have to, you don’t seem like a thinker to me.”
“Hey”, Jin pouted.
“I mean, you seem more like an emotionally driven person”, Kazuya explained. “Of course you think and you’re probably intelligent but you don’t like to think too deeply about things... you act on instinct.”
“You managed to figure that out in just one day?”
“Either you’re very easy to read or I’m just guessing and getting it right.”
“People always did tell me that I’m like an open book even when I try to hide my feelings”, Jin said with a small smile. “Some things never change.”
“And some things change too much”, Kazuya looked at the faint light that was seeping through the crack by the window. “It’s getting late.”
They could hear silent groans coming from outside and Kazuya joined Jin on the bed again, needing comfort. Sitting closely together they waited for night to fall.
