Prologue | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3

Ryu took a deep breath before he entered the living room where his father and mother sat in the sofa, reading books that, judging by the covers, were extremely boring. Odagiri Shinya had his trademark frown on his face as he read and Ryu shivered; he really didn’t want to have to tell his father, but he had to. He cleared his throat and his parents looked at him, making him feel like a deer caught in headlights.

“I have something to tell you”, Ryu started hesitantly and shoved his hands deep into his pockets, shifting from foot to foot.

“What is it?” Shinya asked, his frown deepening if that was even possible.

“This will come as a shock to you but… I’m pregnant.”

Shinya and Yuriko stared at their son in shock; what was the boy talking about?

“What kind of a joke is this?” Shinya glared at Ryu. “It’s not funny, Ryu. Just go to your room.”

“It’s not a joke”, Ryu stepped forward and put the ultrasound on the table in front of his parents and explained everything that the doctor had said.

“You’re actually telling the truth, aren’t you?” Yuriko asked weakly and Ryu nodded, making his mother cover her mouth with her hands to stop sobs from escaping.

“My son can’t be gay”, Shinya said furiously. “You must’ve been forced… It was that Yabuki kid, wasn’t it? I’m going to make him pay for this!”

Shinya slammed his fist on the table and stood up but Ryu blocked his path.

“You’re wrong”, Ryu said with tears in his eyes. “Hayato is the father but he didn’t force me to do anything. I love him and I want to be with him.”

Shinya looked as if he was going to explode in anger and Ryu almost trembled in fear but he stood his ground and looked his father right in the eyes. He wasn’t going to let his father win; he’d managed to convince Shinya not to send him to Canada and he would convince him to let him have the baby. However, the previous time he’d had Yankumi to help him… and Hayato. Maybe Ryu should’ve let Hayato come with him to tell his parents.

“You won’t see Yabuki again”, Shinya hissed and took a strong hold of Ryu’s arm, dragging him to his room and practically throwing him inside.

Even though Ryu struggled against his father, he was too weak and he could only helplessly watch as Shinya closed the door and then he heard the distinct click of the door being locked.

Ryu sank down on his bed and buried his face in his hands, letting tears fall. He’d known that his father wouldn’t be happy but he’d expected that they would at least be able to discuss it. Ryu didn’t think that he would be locked up in his room as if he was still a disobedient child.

He was disappointed in his mother… she was always silent; she never said anything that would go against Shinya’s decisions. It was as if she didn’t have a will of her own and Ryu wondered why she had married Shinya in the first place. It didn’t seem like she was very happy with the arrangement.

Ryu sighed and wiped away his tears, pulling out his cell phone from his jeans pocket. He pressed speed dial and listened to the signals going through before the one on the other line picked up.

“Ryu”, Hayato said breathlessly. “How did it go?”

“He was furious of course”, Ryu said, trying to keep the emotions out of his voice but it still came out a bit choked. “He said that I’ll never see you again.”

“That bastard! I’ll come over and kick his ass!”

“No, Hayato”, Ryu pleaded. “You’ll only make it worse. Please, just stay where you are… I’ll talk to him tomorrow when he’s calmed down a bit, okay?”

“Fine, as long as you’ll be okay”, Hayato sounded worried and Ryu couldn’t help but to smile a little.

“I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me.”

“I can’t help it; I love you too damn much.”

Ryu felt tears appearing in his eyes again at those words and he sniffled, “I love you too, Haya-chan”, the last word came out as an embarrassed whisper and he blushed.

“I think the hormones are making you sappy”, Hayato couldn’t help but to tease the other and Ryu pouted; he’d deny pouting if he was asked though. “I don’t mind it one bit though… I guess I’m sappy even without the hormones.”

“What if dad won’t budge?” Ryu whispered tearfully.

“He has too… we’ll make him budge. Be strong for me… be strong for our baby, okay?”

Ryu nodded, “Okay.”

They talked a bit more about irrelevant things until Ryu’s eyes almost closed of their own violation and then they bade each other goodnight. Ryu didn’t even bother undressing and he fell asleep with the cell phone beside him on the pillow.

Ryu’s entire body was sore when he woke up the next morning and it wasn’t because of a pleasurable reason either. His tight jeans had cut into his waist and the buttons on his jacket had made circle shapes in his skin.

“I need bigger and more comfortable clothes”, Ryu muttered and frowned before standing up and stretching.

He felt a bit light-headed, probably because he hadn’t gotten enough to eat and drink the day before. Ryu could understand Shinya’s anger but couldn’t he at least think of not starving his already skinny and pregnant son to death?

As Ryu thought of this, he heard the click of the door being unlocked and it opened, revealing his mother who was carrying a tray filled with a big breakfast consisting of miso soup, rice and egg rolls.

“I thought that you must be hungry”, Yuriko said gently and placed the tray on the foot end of the bed. “I wanted to bring you food last night but your father made me stay with him.”

“Thanks”, Ryu mumbled and sat down on the bed, placing the tray in his lap and began to eat.

“I remember what it’s like”, Yuriko said nervously and hesitated a bit before she continued, “Carrying a child, I mean. I was so happy while expecting you.”

Ryu looked up at his mother in surprise but then his expression turned gloomy, “Too bad that I’ve only been a disappointment to you and dad then”, he muttered.

“You’ve never been a disappointment”, Yuriko said more heatedly than Ryu had ever heard her speak. “I can’t answer for your father but… I’ve always loved you more than anything else and I’ve been so worried about you. But I can see that you’re happy with Hayato-kun and that’s everything I need to know.”

Yuriko gave her son a small smile and patted him on the shoulder before she turned around and quickly left the room, closing the door behind her. Ryu once again heard the distinct sound of the door being locked but this time he knew that his mother didn’t want to do it. The thought warmed his heart as he continued eating his breakfast.

When he was done eating, he paced back and forth in his room, waiting for something to happen. Shinya couldn’t intend to keep him locked up forever without talking to him, could he? Ryu was getting increasingly annoyed and worried and he wanted to see Hayato really desperately. He even wanted to sit through a two hour lecture about economy rather than being locked up in his room like this.

Ryu contemplated using his cell phone to call his father but then he remembered that he’d deleted Shinya’s number from his phone after one of their fights. He could call his home number but it was always Yuriko who answered and Ryu suspected that she wouldn’t dare to go against his father.

He was startled when his phone started ringing and he checked the caller ID with a pounding heart; it was Hayato. Ryu answered while trying to calm his heart down.

“Have you talked to your old man yet?” Hayato asked immediately.

“No, he won’t come to my room”, Ryu said.

“That’s it, I’m coming over.”

“Please Hayato; you know that he won’t listen to you.”

“My old man is prepared to go with me to convince the bastard that he should let us be together”, Hayato said. “It’ll be alright.”

“No, I’m afraid of what he’d do to you”, Ryu said. “He’s got even more power than you think… it’s dangerous. Please, just let me solve this on my own.”

“I just want you here by my side…” Hayato sighed.

“I know, I want to be by your side too but we have to be patient.”

“You know that patience isn’t my strong point.”

Ryu laughed a little and wiped away a tear that had fallen, “Yeah, I know.”

“Come back to me soon, Ryu.”

“I promise.”

By nightfall, Ryu was more than upset. Shinya hadn’t come to talk to him all day and the only time the door was unlocked was when Yuriko brought him more food and water or when he pounded on the door because he needed to go to the bathroom. Maybe the baby was starting to press against his bladder already.

Even if Ryu’s room was spacious, he was beginning to feel claustrophobic. The plain, white walls were getting closer and it was getting harder and harder for him to breathe properly.

He stood up and walked to the balcony door, testing if it was locked with the extra security lock that Shinya had installed to keep him from escaping when he was younger. The door slid open and Ryu looked over his shoulder to make sure that no one was spying on him before he snuck out on the balcony and looked down.

It wasn’t too far to the ground, was it? He had jumped from the balcony before… When Hayato had been smiling up at him. Take, Hyuuga and Tsucchi had all been there as well.

Ryu took a deep breath and jumped… His legs caved in when he landed and he lied on the ground, a burning sensation filling his stomach. He screamed right out in agony and in the distance he heard someone running towards him but he was too blinded to see who it was.

Voices floated around him but he couldn’t tell who they belonged to and after an unknown amount of time he heard sirens in the distance. Briefly, he wondered what had happened before everything around him faded into black and he had no thoughts anymore.
