Chapter 1 |
Chapter 2 Ryu stared at the doctor with an incredulous expression on his face, ”You’ve got to be kidding me”, he said and almost choked on the words.
“Believe me, I wouldn’t joke about something like this”, the doctor said seriously. “You are pregnant, Odagiri-san.”
“But I’m a man”, Ryu protested and grabbed the lapels of the doctor’s white robe. “I can’t be pregnant because I’m male!”
The doctor winced and gently grabbed Ryu’s hands, making them let go of his lapels and then straightened his robe, clearing his throat, “There have been other cases like this before although it’s very rare. When we develop inside of our mother’s womb, we all start out as girls and then some develop into boys. It seems like your development wasn’t complete and some female elements are still inside of your body, like the uterus.”
Ryu just stared at the doctor, his mouth opening and closing, making him look like a fish stranded on dry land. He couldn’t believe what he’d just heard, it just wasn’t possible. Odagiri Ryu would be a mother. He’d thought of having children but this wasn’t at all like he’d imagined it would be; he never thought that he would be the one to carry the child.
Despite the fact that he was completely overwhelmed by the entirely unexpected revelation, he never once thought of getting rid of the baby. A life was growing inside of his stomach, a life that he and Hayato had created together. Tears filled Ryu’s eyes and a smile formed on his lips.
“What do I have to do to keep the baby healthy?” he asked and looked at the doctor who smiled in relief.
“Since this is such a rare case, you should come to the hospital for checkups at least once a week and we will monitor your progress very closely. You should avoid stress and lifting heavy objects, try not to strain yourself at all.”
Ryu nodded, “I understand”, he said. “Just one more question… how will I be able to deliver the baby? I don’t have a… you know”, Ryu blushed slightly.
“We will perform a caesarean when it’s time for the baby to be born”, the doctor said with a friendly smile. “I’ll prescribe some vitamins to you that will be good for you and the baby. Remember to eat properly and try not to eat too much junk food even if you’ve got cravings for it; healthy food is always the best.”
“I’ll try to remember that”, Ryu said. “Thank you so much, sensei.”
Ryu felt a bit dizzy when he walked out of the hospital and he still couldn’t quite believe it. He and Hayato would become parents! His eyes widened; he had to tell Hayato. What if Hayato wouldn’t want the baby? All of his questions would be answered later that night when he would meet Hayato to tell him how the examination went. Now all Ryu could do was to go home and wait.

Ryu bit his lip and kept checking that his hair was flat as he waited for Hayato to arrive at their meeting spot: the grassy hill they had spent so much time on when they were in high school. It felt like ages ago and Ryu couldn’t believe that only a few months had passed since then. He shivered a bit in the chilly autumn wind and wished that he hadn’t arrived so early; he’d left the house much earlier than necessary because he was too nervous to sit around and wait.
Finally Hayato came sauntering towards him and embraced him tightly.
“How did it go?” Hayato asked when he finally released Ryu from the embrace.
“Uh”, Ryu licked his lips nervously. “Could we go somewhere else to talk? I’m a bit cold.”
“Of course, we can go to a café or something.”
Ryu nodded and they walked side by side, their shoulders brushing against each other now and then. Hayato glanced at Ryu from the corner of his eye and noticed how nervous the usually so composed boy seemed to be.
“Is there something wrong with you?” Hayato asked worriedly but Ryu just gave him a small smile and shook his head.
“Don’t worry”, Ryu said. “I just want to tell you somewhere more… private.”
They walked to a small and cosy café where they sat down at a table in a secluded corner. Hayato ordered black coffee and Ryu ordered hot chocolate; the taller boy gave him a weird look but Ryu just shrugged. As soon as the waitress brought their orders, Hayato looked at Ryu expectantly.
“This will probably be a big shock to you and I bet you won’t believe me at first because initially I didn’t believe it either but it’s true”, Ryu rambled and Hayato looked at him with wide eyes; he hadn’t heard Ryu say that many words at one time before. “So I’ll just say it… I’m pregnant.”
Hayato stared at Ryu, “You’re right, I don’t believe you. What kind of a joke is this? Have you made another stupid bet with Take about whether or not you’ll be able to trick me to believe something really stupid? I know that we were ten the last time that happened but…”
“It isn’t a bet, Hayato”, Ryu said seriously. “Take’s got nothing to do with this, he doesn’t know anything. Call and ask him if you don’t believe me.”
“So you’re really serious about this?” Hayato asked, frowning and Ryu nodded.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a paper which he pushed over the table towards Hayato. The other picked it up and looked at it: a picture of the ultrasound and the tiny little baby that looked more like a peanut than a baby.
“That’s our child”, Ryu said. “Nakatsu-sensei said that I should take you with me to the hospital if you don’t believe me.”
Hayato looked from Ryu to the ultrasound and back again, “So we’re really going to be parents? I’m going to be a father?”
“Yes, you’re going to be a father, Hayato”, Ryu smiled hesitantly.
Hayato looked at Ryu with tear-filled eyes and broke out into an impossibly wide smile, “I never thought that I’d ever get to be one”, he said and his voice trembled because of the tears. “When I decided that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you I gave up on the thoughts of having children but now…”
He couldn’t find anymore words so he simply stood up and dragged Ryu out of his seat, embracing him and kissing him without caring if anyone was looking. Ryu closed his eyes and grabbed the back of Hayato’s warm sweater, kissing back eagerly. Things had gone a lot better than he thought that they would.
“We’re really going to be parents”, Hayato said when the kiss ended and he laughed breathlessly. “Ryu, you’re going to be a mother!”
“Shut up”, Ryu said but his smile belied his harsh words. “Someone can hear you.”
“I don’t care, we’ll have a baby!” Hayato bounced around, flailing his arms. “I’m going to be a father!”
The other customers at the café stared at him but most of them smiled and clapped their hands; they figured that Ryu was just a sort of male looking girl who for some freaky reason had an adam’s apple…
Ryu rolled his eyes and, placing some money on the table, he grabbed the ultrasound and then Hayato’s arm, dragging him out of the café.
“Stop making a fool out of yourself”, Ryu said to Hayato and glared a bit but the taller boy just continued bouncing and grinning like an idiot.
“I can’t help it, I’m so happy”, Hayato said.
“I can’t believe that I was worried that you wouldn’t want the baby”, Ryu muttered and continued dragging Hayato down the street. “People will think that you’re high if you continue bouncing like that.”
“Okay, I’ll try to calm down”, Hayato stopped bouncing and walked normally instead. “When are we going to tell the gang?”
“Preferably after we tell our families”, Ryu said. “We’ll start with yours… are they at home right now?”
“I think they are… do we have to tell them right away?” Hayato looked nervous. “They’ll just think that it’s a joke.”
“I can assure you that their reaction will be much better than my family’s”, Ryu muttered and winced as he thought about the reaction his father would have.
“You’re probably right… Dad isn’t at home right now but he’ll be home soon so let’s go to my place and wait.”

As expected, Hayato’s father and brother thought that it was all a big joke but after Ryu explained the situation, they accepted it pretty quickly.
“I always suspected that there was something between you two”, Taku said. “You’ve always been too close.”
“No, we haven’t”, Hayato protested. “We didn’t get together until a few months ago.”
“Oh please”, Taku snorted, “you’ve been in love with him right from the start. Why else had you been so upset when you had that big fight with him?”
Hayato crossed his arms and pouted. Hirofumi was looking at Ryu, his forehead creased, as if he didn’t quite know what to make of the situation.
“You’ve been like an extra son to me”, he said finally. “Now I guess you’ll really be my son-in-law.”
Ryu smiled a bit and nodded, playing with the hem of his shirt nervously, “Thank you for being so accepting.”
“I’m going to be a grandfather even though my son is gay”, Hirofumi said. “I believe this is a happy occasion.”
“I’m not gay”, Hayato protested and the three others raised their eyebrows at him. “I just… happen to love another guy.”
Ryu, Taku and Hirofumi looked at each other and rolled their eyes, smirking at Hayato’s stupidity.
“Who do you think will be more childish?” Taku said. “Hayato or the baby?”
“Definitely Hayato”, Ryu said right away and they laughed while Hayato pouted.
The evening was spent with looking through old photo albums from when Hayato was a baby and in embarrassing situations. Hayato was pouting the whole time while Ryu laughed and commented on how cute he was as a baby.
“I wish that you were still that cute”, Ryu teased.
“I’m still cute!” Hayato said, flailing his arms.
“I thought that you said that you were handsome”, Ryu smirked.
Hayato blinked, “You tricked me!”
Hirofumi and Take laughed while Ryu just smirked; he hadn’t had so much fun in a long time. He could be a lot more relaxed when he was with Hayato’s family than he had ever been with his own. The thought made him a bit sad but then he looked at the pouting Hayato and smiled warmly; soon he would have a family of his own.
“You two should get married before the baby arrives”, Hirofumi said suddenly.
“Is that even legal?” Hayato asked.
“You could have an unofficial ceremony with family and friends.”
“I don’t know if my family would approve of that”, Ryu said.
“When are you going to tell them?” Taku asked.
“Tomorrow I guess”, Ryu looked at Hayato who nodded.
Ryu was not looking forward to seeing the look on his father’s face…
“I can be there if you want”, Hirofumi said but Ryu smiled and shook his head.
“It’s probably best if I tell them alone”, he sighed and dread filled him; soon the peace would be over.
