last nite included some jazz at jimmy mak's and a couple drinks at the doug fir. drew has a show at stumptown right now. also saw jeremy steinke at jimmy mak's, he'll be having a show in november - I need to get the info again from him - it was good to see him, hadn't seen him since he left me drunk & stranded at kell's after the mfa holiday party - he was "wierded out" and left, which was probably due to the whiskey shots he was having, but we had prearranged for him to drive my car and me to sleep on his couch, .. .. not that it was a good thing that I was smashed, we were all dancing in the lower area and it was great fun and all of a sudden I couldn't find jeremy anywhere... then I ended up making out with some italian guy, I managed to pry him off me (the question is why did I go with him to his truck in the first place???) and here ends the trip down memory lane. in any case, it was great to see jeremy yesterday. we were studio mates at pnca and know each other quite well in that respect when it comes to our painting, which really goes quite into our cores. he's a fabulous painter and I'm excited to see his show in november, also it would be nice to hang out mroe more

i text msged michael kadera the other day - no response - wonder what he is up to - wonder what paintings he has been making - but a little afraid also - I both respect his work and also it is maddening - in certain ways he goes above and beyond - in other ways he cuts his work short of its potential, and his potential - he has painting talent pouring out from every pour if he would just push it FURTHER! conceptually he is(was, at least) starting to do great things with his associations and combinations of things, relationships, photo-collage type imagery... but the question is, why laboriously use paint when the same result could be achieved with other media, like photography or what not, if you are going to use paint as a medium, why use it in that manner, it's like... representational/realistic/plastic.... and not quite refined ENOUGH, not quite ... just not quite. I'm only so hard on him because I know him so well and because we were also studio mates; I know what he is capable of, and I know where he - just goes for "passing", or "enough" or whatever, but it's not quite ... if he took the gift that he has and pushed it further than just a snide commentary or ... illustration of.... I know he works hard, but ... it's just maddening. as my work is to him, too chaotic, too much destruction, reworking, etc. I do miss our discussions. plus I owe him a bazillion dinners, probably some art supplies, beer, wine, cigarettes, who knows, when I was the starving art student he actually had a job as a waiter and so could afford things I couldn't, was very nice to the rest of us but I also found him wasteful, throwing away perfectly good brushes that the rest of us could use, things like that. we did become the best of friends, kind of killed it when we took it to a physical level briefly then we were wierd around each other - it was like, we had crushes on each other, and in many ways ultimate respect for each other, but also drove each other mad - a love/hate type thing I suppose. the last time I saw him was... at his show? featuring the giant clown, and ptg with starbucks cup. i should google him, see what it comes up with
