CHARACTER

✧ NAME:Yurie Harper
✧ SERIES: Pokémon (OC)

✧ HISTORY: The Pokémon world is an interesting place where humans and creatures called Pokémon live side-by-side, as partners, pets and friends. Pokémon are, in general different from "normal" flora and fauna in that most of them have more sentience and intelligence than your average animal, in addition to their spectacular powers. Pokémon are captured and tamed by placing them in special devices called Pokéballs. Pokéballs turn Pokémon into energy for storage. Aside from the presence of Pokémon, this world is very similar to the one in which we, the muns, live. Now, on to the character herself.

Yurie (who prefers to go by her last name, Harper) is a tomboy from Ecruteak City, Johto,. She is both a pokémon trainer and a pokémon athlete; that is, she trains her monsters to participate in the Pokéathlon, a series of special games for Pokémon. She is the daughter of wealthy human physician Maxwell Harper and Ghost-type researcher Rose Harper. Max and Rose met in Lilycove City in Hoenn while Max was finishing residency and Rose was studying the ghosts of Mount Pyre. They were soon married and moved into an old, large house in Ecruteak City so that Rose could study along with the Ghost type gym leader there. The pair moved into an old, abandoned, Western-style mansion on the outskirts of the city and began renovations.

So, Harper grew up in a house constantly filled with ghost type pokémon, both wild and those belonging to her mother. Her mother often sets out food and offerings around the outside and inside of the house, attracting ghost Pokémon from miles around. Ghastlys, Haunters, Shuppets, Duskulls and other mysterious Pokémon like Vulpix and Murkrow would often show up and take up residence in the home. Instead of being shoo’d out as pests, Rose welcomed the wild Pokémon into her home like guests, much to the chagrin of her husband. After all, comfortable Pokémon were easier to study.
Because of this constant interaction with ghosts and other creepy critters, Harper is quite... well, strange. She went to school in Ecruteak until high school. Her Pokémon were received in various points in her life. Charcoal, now an adult Charizard, was a gift to her from her parents on her tenth birthday. The small, oddly colored and patterned Charmander came from a breeder in Hoenn who lived and worked atop Mount Chimney. Harper and Charcoal trained every day and soon Charcoal had evolved into Charmeleon. At some point, Harper made a vow to only train Pokémon with sharp, pointy teeth like hers and Charcoal’s. They were the coolest kinds of creatures, after all.
Harper and Charcoal would often explore the caves near Ecruteak, using Charcoal’s tail as a torch. One of Harper’s favorite activities was going into caves during the daytime and then screaming at the top of her lungs. This would, of course, disturb the everyloving shit out of the Zubats and Golbats who lived there. The bats would then chase the young girl out of the cave, swooping and screeching and biting. Harper thought it was just great fun, while Charcoal ran around like a Combusken with its head cut off trying to keep the more belligerent bats from injuring her. One day, Harper was exploring the cave with Charcoal when she spied a pair of glittering gems. When disturbed, the gems turned out to be the crystallized eyes of a young, curious Sableye. Harper didn’t know what the hell the Pokémon was, seeing as they were natives of Hoenn and only rarely found in Johto. But the curious female Sableye followed the girl out of the cave and back to her house. When Harper’s mother saw the Pokémon, she squealed in childish delight. “Do you know what this is?! It’s a rare Ghost type Pokémon! Where did you find it?!” Sensing the woman’s glee, the Sableye grinned, showing it’s rows of razor-sharp, rock-chomping teeth. Harper fell in love, and the rest was history. Charcoal and the female Sableye, now named Gemineye, became the backbone of Harper’s team.
The rest of her Pokémon came to her in various ways; Kudzu was found in the grass as a Bulbasaur, Rampage was a decorative Magikarp in her family’s pond, Thrasher was caught on a fishing trip, Flieger was captured as a Gligar after Harper disturbed a nest, Pandora is but one of the many bats living in the caves near Ecruteak and Rocky was received as an egg for winning a Pokéathlon tournament.
Harper became interested in pokéathlon when she was 12 years old. After a trip to the national park, she explored the Pokéathlon plaza. After seeing the displays of power and speed, stamina and skill, she fell in love. It seemed every bit as challenging and exciting as battle, but without the danger of injuring her Pokémon. It was intellectual. It was powerful. It was amazing. She aimed to become a champion and 5 years later, using Charcoal, Gemmy and Flieger, she achieved her dream. But she was rather angry with the prize of what seemed like a rock and some gift cards, so she signed herself (and her friend Dino, against his will) for a tournament called PCBC. She was knocked out in her third round for cheating. And this is where we find her today.
((As a note, PCBC was an OC tournament based on Pokémon held on DeviantART.))
✧ TIMELINE: After returning home from PCBC.
✧ PERSONALITY: Harper is, simply put, creepy. She doesn't seem to realize it half the time, and the other half of the time, she is using it to her advantage. However, she is fairly lonely and tries to make friends with just about everyone she meets, whether they approve or not. Her best friend is a young man named Dino Soria, whose skittish personality is in opposition to her own high-voltage quirks.

She loves her Pokémon, and most of her opponents' Pokémon as well. She is very touchy feely and hugs people often, or gets in their personal space and gives them one of her "winning smiles". Some people (Dino) would say she is evil, but in truth, she is just immoral. It happens, when you grow up around ghost types and not many people. She enjoys lurking in the shadows and popping out to surprise people, getting a kick out of their various reactions (even if it is getting punched in the face). So more or less, outside of battle and Pokéathlon, she is friendly and cheerful, but creepy and immoral. She is not opposed to using people to get what she wants or running out on the bill when you go out to lunch with her. Friendships with her are often stressed and awkward, but worthwhile due to her fierce loyalty.

In battle, however, she is a bit different. Any semblance of friendliness and frivolity is replaced by a shit-eating grin and confidence. She bluffs, boasts and brags, even if she is outmatched, in an attempt to psych out her opponents. She is not opposed to a little cheating. And while she is all hugs and fairly obnoxious, pointy toothed sunshine to opponent's pokémon when out of battle, she is ruthless and merciless in battle. She is not afraid to critically injure another trainer's Pokémon if that's what it takes to win. The same goes in Pokéathlon, but since she likes it better, she is less likely to cheat; she wants to win on her and her Pokémon's own merits. Everything is a game to her, and she rarely seems serious.
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: Harper herself doesn't have any powers, and her abilities include a fit body and a sharp mind and wit. But her Pokémon have a variety of different elemental and physical attacks. For example, Charcoal can breath fire and fly, Gemineye can spit poison and chew through stone, etc. A post with her Pokémon's abilities, attacks and personalities is provided here.
✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Day

✧ MASK DESIGN: A carnivore skull.
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: the Harper Family mansion and some of the surrounding forest. It's a nice place. A large, Western-style estate with some Japanese influences (such as paper doors, a fish pond, etc). The house is overrun with wild ghost type pokémon, as well as some others that are associated with the type (Murkrow, Vulpix, etc).

SAMPLES

✧ FIRST PERSON: pretty neat. I guess. [Harper is sitting at a desk in her Place of Solace. Gemineye, her sableye, is sitting on the desk and chewing on a geode] I mean, I can dream up anything I want! Anything at all! I don't even need any Pokébucks. How great is that? Heehee! Now Gemmy can have whatever kind of rocks she wants. Even diamonds! [The strange little creature looks up at the word "diamond"] "Saaaaai? Not that I'd give you diamonds. You'd get fat! [Aww. Now the Pokémon looks crestfallen. Harper cackles and pats her on the head.] How about some nice cubic zirconia instead? It'll be better on your teeth, Gemmy. [Back to the camera, now] But seriously, guys. What's up with the mask thing? That seems like the dumbest rule. Though this mask, man. [She holds up the mask she had been given; it looks like the skull of a large dog or something] I have to admit, it is pretty stylish! And so very me.
✧ THIRD PERSON: Harper didn’t regret giving Dino that cheating device. Not one bit. He deserved to win, and he really couldn’t do it of his own merits. There wasn’t a snowball’s chance in a volcano of that. And she, well… on some weird fluke, she’d already been eliminated. Something about “gratuitous injury of the opponent’s Pokémon.”
No, what she DID regret was getting caught. PCBC was one of the most prestigious tournaments for fighting Pokémon (or so they said; to be honest, Harper hadn’t heard of it until she’d found that flyer) and now she was banned from ever participating again. In fact, she was banned from ever coming within 50 yards of where the tournament was being held. She was also in trouble with Silph Co for stealing technology, but since she was a minor, they settled for a restraining order and a pretty hefty fine (that her parents begrudgingly paid and promised to never, ever let her live down). But was it worth it? Totally. It was totally worth it to see Dino’s Anorith kick ass and take names. If she couldn’t win, then he could win for her. Of course, that didn’t happen either. His opponent went and got high and somehow, someway, managed to pull off a victory.
It was such a pile of Tauros dung. Oh well. There were other regions, other tournaments that she could join. Besides, it’d mostly been hearsay. No real proof was ever produced. Her Pokémon and their trainer could get stronger, in other ways.
Once she was ungrounded, of course. She snuck out, plenty of times, mostly to bother Dino or one of her other friends, but her folks were making her work off every penny of the fine. Between helping her father at the hospital, working around the house to keep the damage from the ghost pokémon to a minimum, and odd jobs in Ecruteak, she didn’t really have any spare time to herself. It was eleven at night before she even got home and flopped on her bed, shooing away a Ghastly who thought it was funny to hide in her pillow. Gemineye, her Sableye, curls up next to her. “Saaaai?”
“Man, Gemmy! I’m totally wiped. How much longer do I have to work so friggin’ hard to pay off this stuff?” The Pokémon gives her a look, removing her scarf and throwing it on the ground. “Don’t give me that look. It was totally a good idea and you know it. You helped me grab the thing!”
“Saaaayble!”
“Tch. You little turncoat.”
But Harper can’t help but smile, showing her fangs. She flicks the Sableye lovingly on the head and then switches off the light. “Goodnight, dummy.” The purple imp-like creature nuzzles into the blankets next to her.
Little did she or her companions know, the next day would be anything but the same-old, same-old. That night, Harper dreamt of endless roads.

✧ ORIGINAL CHARACTER QUESTION: When Harper wakes up in a strange town, the first thing she does is scream a little at nothing in particular. The next thing she does? Is check to make sure her Pokémon are with her. At this point, she would let them all out and give them quick checks. Are they all ok? Are they scared or injured? No, they're just confused, like she is. But with her companions, her panic turns to annoyance. She doesn't have anything to be scared of, but she can sure as shit be irritated about what just happened. Were they kidnapped? What happened? The note and mask would catch her attention next, and she would be likely to simply scoff at both of them at first. Of course, once she heads outside and realizes that hey, people are giving her dirtier looks than usual, that maybe that note and the welcome were on to something. Time to explore. Yurie Harper must dominate her surroundings. She won't be stopped by some silly mask world!!
