I.
Helpless, Junsu wrings his hands in frustration as he racks his brains for a way to comfort the weeping angel before his eyes. His untainted heartstrings are tugged and he feels like bawling himself if not for the fact that the older man had cried a tsunami enough to drown the both of them and he doesn’t feel like contributing to it anymore.
Look, hyung, Junsu says, he’s just a devil. I mean, I’m sure he’s not as scary as you think he is -
Jaejoong wrenches his head upwards to look at Junsu and his swollen red eyes terrify the latter. What do you know? I’ve seen the horribly mangled bodies of the victims. I don’t want to be the next sacrifice!
Junsu knows he’s lost the argument since he was never good at persuading others with his words anyway. He looks at Jaejoong who is dabbing at the corner of his eyes pathetically and thinks about the cruelty of the Mayor who picked Jaejoong as the sacrifice because of his humanly perfect features and irresistible figure. He alone cannot imagine a life without Jaejoong and Junsu knows Jung Yunho would not be able to survive as well if anything happened to him. But Junsu pictures Yunho’s strong physique and decides that he would be strong enough to take on the devil if he dared to touch Jaejoong in any way.
Every half a year, a human man living in the town of Harudal would be chosen as a human sacrifice to the devil who dominated the town, sustaining its economic development and producing security, wealth and riches to its people who lived in material comforts. He was the mastermind behind the town’s operations, controlling it with his massive power and supernatural abilities. All that the devil asked for was a fresh human offering worthy to be his victim and the money minded Mayor had eagerly agreed despite general outrage from the public.
No one had seen the devil before. Or rather, no one had seen the devil in the flesh - well, essence, and managed to make it out alive. The devil kept his identity mysterious by living permanently in his castle and never stepping out of it at all. Sometimes, rumours and gossips were spread around the town but not one survived for more than a week. The only clue which the people had any inkling to the devil’s life would be the bodies of civilians which the devil, on a regular basis, bestowed death as a punishment if he deemed them to be guilty of crimes.
He was the secret dictator of the town. Nobody knew his name, and nobody knew what he looked like.
Hello? Earth to Junsu? Jaejoong’s hand catches his attention and he snaps out of his thoughts. For some odd reason, he pictures the devil to look like the man in his recurring dreams. It causes a shiver to run down his spine.
Junsu tries to cut the mental connection he has placed between the two different characters in his mind but fails. The images double, overlap, and match.
Curiousity bubbles up in him and suddenly he is interested to know what the devil looks like; to talk, to feel, to touch him. And perhaps he would be able to find out who the stranger of his dreams is - Junsu brushes that thought out of his head.
His eyes focus back on Jaejoong and he makes one of his usual split second decisions. I will go with you.

Jaejoong’s protests did not deter Junsu. With a simple if you should die, I would at least know what to tell Jung Yunho and that shut Jaejoong up. The older man had no wish to see Yunho for the last time; for he knew that if he did, he would be unable to make himself leave.
He glances around the apartment that they share, for the last time. Everything around them seems so normal and unchanged; the breakfast dishes still in the sink, the worn-down couch that creaked, the haphazard shoe boxes beside the door. Yet he is no longer the working college student he is; he is now the chosen sacrifice for the devil. Jaejoong is unable to tear his gaze away from his best friend, who is packing his things in a hurried frenzy. Junsu …
Hmm? The said man did not look up.
Thank you. I would not have let anyone else do this with me, anyhow.
Junsu closes the gap between them, putting his arms around Jaejoong in a loose embrace. I know. Thank you for letting me go with you. He fails to see a sad, sad smile and the desperateness in Jaejoong’s eyes.
I’m sorry, a tear falls down his cheek again.
Whatever for, silly. Junsu laughs, but his laugh is cut off midway as he experiences wooziness in his head and is unable to stand upright as his legs grow weak. Jaejoong holds him up, the tip of his nose reddening. He searches Jaejoong’s face with whatever remaining strength he has and discovers the glistening tear that says, I’m sorry, Junsu, I love you too much to let you go with me.
He nods with difficulty, I knew that was coming, before falling limp in Jaejoong’s arms.
A brown glass bottle filled with little white, round pills stands beside the stove where a tantalising scent lingers from the remaining contents of Jaejoong’s beloved breakfast frying pan.

The carriage pulls away from Jaejoong’s apartment, carrying with it the hearts of Jung Yunho and Kim Junsu, as well as the consciences of the civilians of Harudal town.
Jaejoong casts a solemn, yearning glance at the top window where he knows Junsu is sleeping next to, before the wheels take him round the corner and vanishes.
