II.

By the time Junsu opens his eyes, he knows he’s too late.

Calmly, he grabs just his keys and a long, black overcoat in one hand and dashes out of the door. It is snowing outside, big, fat, pure white flakes, and Junsu puts up his black hood that contrasts greatly against the pale ground.

A smile forms on his face as he notices the ruts and tracks left behind, leading away from their apartment.

Sucking in a deep breath, he takes a step and embarks on the long journey that would lead him to Kim Jaejoong, and … the devil.

It takes Junsu three hours to hunt down where the devil resided in. Jaejoong might have outsmarted Junsu, but he had not realised that the wonders of modern technology could outsmart anybody. The night before, after Junsu made up his mind not to let Jaejoong out of his sight, he secretly installed a GPS mobile tracking device that would allow him access to Jaejoong’s whereabouts. Junsu knew Jaejoong too well - he wouldn’t notice that one of his five cell phones had an extra gadget attached to it.

A red dot beeps frantically on Junsu’s cell phone screen and he shuts the phone with a little sigh. The icy wind blows and he shivers a little. His hands are starting to turn red and he rubs them together again and again, trying to keep warm.

Junsu is finally here.

Stopping to admire the rare sight before his eyes, Junsu is overwhelmed by the magnificent mansion in front of him. For a moment, he feels lost in the world of fantasy and fiction and is unable to return to reality. It feels surreal, he thinks. How could a devil live in such a cool place?

The luminous moon shines down upon a gleaming mansion formed of white stone, its roof slightly buried under a cap of glistening falling flakes of snow. Beyond the castle, to its west, lays a small, grey lake that had been frozen over. From where he is standing, Junsu could see tiny pinpricks of warm light shining on the pale ground from the windows. If it hadn’t been for its chilling occupant, Junsu might have thought it fun to explore its depths. However, coming here now … was equivalent to courting his own death.

But he had no choice. If he wanted to save Jaejoong, he had to do this. I’m probably the first idiot out of many to come, Junsu thinks comfortingly.

Jaejoong, wait for me, he murmurs under his breath, drawing courage from his own words.

Junsu walks cautiously to the front gates of the mansion, contemplating his options of getting in. The black, forbidding gates suddenly creaks open with a grating sound, scaring him out of his wits. Simultaneously, Junsu is seized by fear. The devil knows I’m here, he thinks, what now? His brain freezes and panic takes over. But logic is the ultimate victor and settles down comfortably in first place, ruling his senses. If the devil wanted to kill me, he could have done so easily while I was still standing still like a moron outside.

He squares his shoulders and marches in like a soldier off to war. Here I come.

Junsu tries to step noiselessly, but the more he tries the louder his footsteps echo in his ears. Exasperated, he gives up and instead concentrates on his surroundings. Once he walks in through the huge archway, the gates snap shut behind him ominously and he jumps again, cursing silently.

His mouth drops open automatically as he takes in the bloody sight within the mansion. A strong stench stings his nose and he inhales involuntarily. Headless corpses are scattered randomly on the red carpeted floor while their heads hang pendulously overhead, swinging to an invisible breeze. Their bloodstains add a darker shade to the already blood-red ground and white bones protrude obscenely from some severed necks. Some bodies are intact while others have huge chunks taken out of them, and all that remains of their eyeballs are masses of white slime.

Bile rises in his throat and Junsu throws up uncontrollably, unable to stand the goriness that he sees. He wipes his mouth with his sleeve after expelling the contents of his stomach and prays to God to protect and give him courage.

Junsu does not want to imagine the state that Jaejoong is in now.

Trying to avoid treading on any dead bodies, he moves towards a grand staircase made of gold that led upwards. He feels a presence within the mansion and trusts his instincts to lead him to the older man.

Once on the second floor, Junsu sees a trail of fresh blood. Jaejoong’s blood. His hands start to shake again, and he follows them towards the luxurious cherrywood double doors. His fingers curl around the crucifix necklace around his neck and he pushes the double doors open.

Surprise, a deep voice announces snidely.
