My supervisor left a message for me this morning, asking if I could possibly come in to work today, as my coworker had called in sick. I had been looking forward to biking down to Barnes & Noble and making Dnd characters with Monica, but something in the pleading tone of her voice in the message made me decide to go in. Plus the extra money won't hurt. I called and talked to one of the processors, and when I told him I could work, he said "Thank you so much, Sam." (he seemed to be listening to someone in the background) "A (my supervisor) says she loves you."
Realizing I had to change clothes (I was wearing jeans, a big no-no), I caught a bus back to the apartment to change. When I came back, I brought along a pair of scrubs that I never wear to put in my locker, so if I got called again, I wouldn't have to worry about going home to change. I'm so smart sometimes! Now my locker contains my work shoes (bought specifically for standing around for long periods of time), a half-empty box of granola bars (a lifesaver on my breaks), a change of clothes, and my lab coat.
I hoped my biology lab would finish on time so I could get to the lab before my shift started. I was feeling very annoyed at the whole scope of the class and all the idiotic projects we have to do. So I wasn't in the best mood while I walked towards the lab, although the bright sunlight and wonderful temperatures did wonders for me.
But seeing the relief on my coworkers' faces when I came in to help them out drove all the bad feelings away. Periodically throughout the evening while I was working, A or a processor would come up and thank me again for coming in. Apparently three other people called in sick, and if I hadn't come in tonight, "we would have died" (their words). It's amazing how a simple thank-you can brighten your whole day. I'm really glad I could be there for them.
After work, I still was able to have coffee with Monica at Michaelangelo's. A very good day.
