Best & Worst of 2003 pt.1

All the magazines are doing year-end wrap ups, so I thought I'd start one. This was supposedly my 'year off', but I was more prolific than ever. I kind of worked under a depressed haze the whole time, but now I feel like I'm coming out the other end of the shitty experience called 'being 27 years old'. Here goes:

THE VILE FILES: After my Lost Gems series (reviews of Karen Carpentar's solo album, etc.) ended up in Seattle Gay News hell, I was able to make my return to Tablet with The Vile Files. Thanks go to LaToya Jackson and Tina Yothers for making shitty albums for me to 'review'. The latest: http://tabletnewspaper.com/music/82_vilefiles.html (nice segue, eh?)

EM'MA GAWD! & ANNA REXIA: We performed and performed again! Showing that a lip sync act can do fun stuff for the kids, The Gurls shook their groove thangs to Le Tigre, Postal Service, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs! They performed at places like Union Garage, the Bar, and the Wildrose. They helped judge the Cutest Band Contest, and gave trophies to the winning bands. They rocked the Pride Parade show so hard they'll NEVER be invited back! Oh, and the comic lived on in obscurity, but at least I learned to print my word bubbles clearer...

POPSTAR SILHOUETTES: At the mid-show party for my third, and final!, solo art show, I previewed a scene from my play. I wrote the play for a contest and just to see if I could even write a play. Em'ma and Anna acted out a scene from their childhoods and it got a positive response.

THE STRANGER: They gave me props, saying that with my art show I was getting the attention I deserved. They called my comic a lovingly drawn and bitingly clever parody of them. Ok, my comic is more than just a Stranger parody, but I'm not complaining! The Stranger returned the favor by running a parody of my comic that was hilarious! I also got a Stranger writer to host my art show.

GETTING CENSORED: After I did the Sexiest Video Store Clerk, the SGN said I could no longer mention Dan Savage or the Stranger by name, just parody them in my comic. This, and pissing off wannabe celebrities (which I tend to do often), is a sign you're going places!

PARTICLES ZINE: I learned how to make a zine with my friend. I got to see my story on Daryl Hannah & some of my poetry in print.

Other highlights include: acting out my friend's monologue in drag at a Prosituting Genius cabaret, getting zillions of self-serving articles and photos printed in the Seattle Gay New, creating new women-dressed-as-men characters Tess Tickle and Igor Beaver or 'two guys from Lynnwood with mullet hairdos, dude!'. Guerrilla Masquerade Parties were a blast, as were the Male Bonding Experiments I helped with. And the return of Outcast Productions, my little ol' theatre group, with our best reviewed show! (which I think I assistant directed or something) I also got to co-headline the Seattle Spit poetry show at the Wildrose.

Stayed tuned for The Worst of 2003! (not being an optimist, this'll be my favorite part!)
