Summary: Three years after the unity of the canines and the felines, everything is going well. The land is prospering, the people are at peace and Kyuhyun and Sungmin couldn't be happier. Until the day they recieve word that the bears have been attacked by a force that nobody knew existed. And now, they must find a way to stop the attacks before that force can reach their kingdom. And if it does, the terrible dream that has been plaguing one of their subjects will come true. And that will mean the end of their empire.
The Formphasers: Dirge of the Dragons
Stage Five: Invasion of the Eagles
The bear population that remained were being cared for by canines and felines who had offered their homes. Now that the mountains had been poisoned with Dragonkind, there was no place else for them to go. Zhoumi and Henry were recovering well but had vowed revenge on their invaders.
Sungmin was worried. The dragons had invaded the bear lands. That meant that they could invade other areas. It had been three years since the war between the canine and the feline had ended but both of the races were still rebuilding that which had been lost during the battles. Canine and feline alike were still getting stronger.
But what Zhoumi had said three years ago was right. They had weakened themselves so much that they needed each other to survive. That meant it would be easier for an invasion to conquer them, wouldn’t it?
“Emperor Sungmin, the bears have been settled properly,” Eunhyuk reported, popping out of nowhere and bowing deeply. Sungmin smiled.
“Thank you. Could you find Jongwoon and decide upon more frequent border patrols? With the invasion of the bears, we must be ready to anticipate invasion of our lands,” Sungmin’s voice betrayed his anxiety.
“Yes, Emperor. We shall see to more frequent border patrols,” Eunhyuk promised. He lay a reassuring hand on his monarch’s arm before leaving in search of Jongwoon. Sungmin watched him go, wishing he could predict the future so he would know what to do at the present time.
Still, dragons couldn’t exist. It wasn’t possible. They were merely legends, passed down from generation to generation, growing even more terrifying with each retelling. And stories didn’t come to life and attack other races. Or did they?
After all, didn’t all myths have a basis in fact? Sungmin was practically going insane trying to puzzle it all out. Perhaps Zhoumi and Henry were right. And if they were, then that meant the legends were real. And it was possible because all legends were based on facts. Sungmin was practically giving himself a headache thinking like this.
Maybe it would be better if he stopped thinking about this. He couldn’t change it anyways. It had already happened. The invasion of the bears was now written into their history. Well, it would be if they were ever to reclaim their lands again. But would they?
!*!*!*!*!
Ryeowook looked around at the large fir trees that dotted the eagle lands. They were beautiful trees, big thick trunks of bark protruded from the earth and thrust into the sky, blotting out sunlight from the ground below. They were beautiful with their green needles that never faded and never died with the coming winter.
The ocelot smiled at the peace and tranquility of the eagle lands. Jaejoong and Yunho were lucky to be the rulers of such nice lands. Ryeowook watched as two eagles chased after one another in the sky. It was truly a beautiful sight to see eagles playing together, dipping and soaring in the air. Ryeowook felt truly at peace.
He looked up to see the homes of the eagles built into the large trees. Suspended bridges and pathways between branches brought the homes and shops together. It was a whole city suspended in the treetops.
Yunho and Jaejoong had obviously made use of being able to fly and used the ability to their advantage. This way, anything grounded would have to climb the trees in order to be seen. Once the eagles saw the enemy coming, it would be easy to dispose of them.
Ryeowook watched as eagles swooped in and out of shops, homes and walkways, phasing as they did so. It was a joy to watch the beautiful creatures dance in the element in which they had been born.
And then he heard it. A soft, rushing noise. A sort of crackling sound that made the ocelot pause and listen. He could hear a sound that seemed like water lapping against a rock but at the same time, was too harsh to be such a gentle sound.
Ryeowook puzzled for a moment. And then he saw a tongue of flame leap from the ground. And he understood what it was. It was fire. The invaders were setting the trees on fire. There was a squawk from the eagles above as they realized some of the trees were burning. An alarm was raised through the city in the air. Ryeowook could hear a voice through speakers he couldn’t see.
“AeroCity is on fire. Please take to the sky or ground yourselves. The trees are on fire. Emergency crews are on the way!”
The ocelot watched as thousands of eagles spread their semi-form wings and jumped into the air with the grace of a cat leaping for its prey. Some eagles took to the sky, flying until they got tired. Others clambered down from the trees to walk on the ground. And there, they were attacked.
The smoke stopped the eagles above from seeing the danger. As more of them came to land on the ground, more of them succumbed to the large teeth and terrible claws that awaited them from the dragons.
Ryeowook couldn’t make out what the forms looked like but he knew that they had long tails and were scaled with armour that seemed impenetrable. There was no use in fighting. Now, some eagles with blades had landed, trying to fight against the onslaught that was coming their way.
Feathers were ripped from wings, grounding the birds permanently. Without wings, how was one to fly? Chicks, elders and fighters alike were all falling to the blades. Ryeowook watched as a eagle swooped in low to see what was happening and a dark shape burst from the shadows, leaping up and catching the bird in its jaws. There was a screech of terror before silence.
Ryeowook turned his face from the horror. The wind began to blow and the smoke cleared for a moment, showing the other eagles the scene below. Another announcement was being made but Ryeowook couldn’t hear it. There was only one thing he could hear and it wasn’t even the call of an eagle.
“The Conquest, it is for the Conquest! For the Conquest!”
!*!*!*!*!
Sungmin watched the land around him. He had a feeling that something would happen today but he was uncertain of the event. Perhaps if he watched long enough, he would be able to discern the occurrence.
“We have ordered extra patrols along the borders. If we see any sort of invasion, what action would you like us to take?” Jongwoon asked, bowing down. Sungmin waved away the formalities.
“Jongwoon, you know you need not bow to me. You have been my guard since I was a kitten. Our status has not changed since then,” Sungmin smiled. Jongwoon grinned back and rose. “As for the action you must take; alert the Empire and prepare all squads, battalions and armies for battle. We do not want to lose our lands,” Sungmin instructed.
“Very well and if they should attack us before we have a chance to alert?”
“You may attack and defend. Try to warn the rest of the kingdom as soon as possible. The towns on the far edges of our land need time as well to prepare for invasion,” Sungmin looked grim. He hoped it wouldn’t come to that.
“This is all precautionary, correct? There is nothing that would attack us?” Jongwoon asked. Sungmin could see what he was asking. He wanted to know the truth so he would know whether or not so he would know whether to send Ryeowook somewhere safer.
“Nothing as of yet. If anything is to attack us, you shall probably be the first to know,” Sungmin answered, wincing at the truth of that statement. Jongwoon would probably be on the receiving end of any attack since he took every patrol he was assigned to and every backup patrol he wasn’t.
“I assume I will be the first to know,” Jongwoon answered, looking slightly pained at the suggestion. Sungmin gave him a sympathetic smile.
“Ryeowook will be fine. It does not look like there shall be an invasion any time soon,” Sungmin told his guard. The tiger still looked semi-doubtful. Then Kyuhyun breezed into the room, causing Jongwoon to start and grab his blade in case of attack.
“Did I not tell you once before that my mate outranked you and any threat to me was treason?” Kyuhyun asked dryly, a smile playing around his lips as he walked over to Sungmin and wrapped his arms around him. Jongwoon rolled his eyes.
“Good afternoon to you as well, Kyuhyun,” Jongwoon bowed. The canine king grinned before releasing his mate and nodding at one of the head guards.
“What brings you to me?” Sungmin asked, curious to why the wolf had come.
“I need your signature on these documents,” Kyuhyun thrust out a pile of papers to the jaguar. Sungmin picked one up and scanned it.
“It seems all you need of me anymore is my signature,” Sungmin said, signing the documents with practiced ease.
“You know I need you entirely to function,” Kyuhyun rolled his eyes.
“And this is an entirely sickening exchange,” Jongwoon interrupted. Kyuhyun turned to him and was about to tell him off before a red fox ran into the room, panting and pointing wildly out the window.
“The trees! They’re on fire!” the messenger gasped. Sungmin turned to look out the window. There was a bright orange flame, stretching towards the sky, devouring the trees of the eagles and growing ever larger. The feline’s eyes widened. It was an inferno, raging and starving, eating everything in its path.
“Is it coming towards us?” Kyuhyun asked, springing immediately into action. The fox shook his head.
“Not anymore. It was coming towards us and it must have been burning all night for it to arrive here from the other side. But now, the wind has changed blows it in the other direction, back towards the eagles,” the fox answered. Sungmin’s eyes widened.
“Jaejoong! Yunho! What are they going to do?” Sungmin gasped. Kyuhyun glanced down at the hands grasping his shirt and winced. Sungmin’s claws were out without his knowledge. He was grateful the poison had been removed.
“They will be fine. They know that they are welcome here in case of disaster,” Kyuhyun responded. “They will know what to do.”
!*!*!*!*!
Wings beat the air as the body attached scanned the ground with sharp eyes. It could see the scaled shapes that dotted the lands of the bears. Had this atrocity occurred here too? Were the canine/feline lands also occupied by this brutal enemy?
The eagle continued to look, its eyes picking out the many bodies that lay motionless. Most of the carcasses were simply torn fur and bloody meat. It appeared that the bears too had been taken by surprise.
The bald eagle let out a screech, signalling that all the birds behind it turn north and head that way. There was a great flapping as hundreds of eagles turned to face north. The eagle in front turned to the bird on its left. The two of them looked at each other, uncertain if they were leading their people into safety or despair.
!*!*!*!*!
There was a loud squawk which scared Sungmin half to death as he looked around and spotted an eagle perched on the window sill. He walked over with Kyuhyun close behind and regarded the animal.
It changed from a golden eagle to a tall, handsome man. Sungmin gasped in recognition.
“Changmin! It’s you! Why are you here? What has happened in the eagle lands?” Sungmin asked, looking at the taller male for answers.
“We were attacked. Captains Jaejoong and Yunho wish to see you and nest the eagles in the trees you have at your disposal. What message should I bring back to them?” Changmin asked with none of his usual importance. Instead, he seemed tired. Sungmin’s heart went out to him.
“Tell the Captains that we shall see them and you may nest the eagles in the trees,” Sungmin nodded, looking to Kyuhyun for confirmation. Kyuhyun dipped his head in assent and Changmin re-phased, soaring out into the light.
“Did he say they were attacked?” Jongwoon asked, coming closer. Sungmin nodded.
“I wonder if it was by the same race as before. Do you think they too were attacked by dragons?” Sungmin asked.
“Perhaps. Jongwoon, fetch Henry so that he may hear this tale as well. Now we have two of the four races here. We have enough space but I wonder if there will be an attack against us,” Kyuhyun murmured. Sungmin touched his arm lightly. The wolf hugged him to his side, holding Sungmin in a tight embrace.
“Greetings, Emperor Sungmin and Alpha Kyuhyun,” Jaejoong bowed. He had flown through the window and phased in the middle of the room. Yunho followed him, and linked their hands together.
“Greetings Captains Jaejoong and Yunho of the eagles,” Sungmin and Kyuhyun bowed in return. Henry walked in with Jongwoon and stopped at the sight of the eagles.
“What brings you here?” the sun bear asked, running to greet his friends. Jaejoong smiled but it lacked its usual lustre.
“We were attacked. They set our trees on fire,” Yunho answered. Henry clapped a hand to his mouth looking horrified.
“But you managed to escape unharmed,” Kyuhyun pointed out. Jaejoong nodded.
“We did because we managed to see the fire before it did too much damage. But as we speak, that fire consumes our homes and our land. We were powerless to stop it,” Jaejoong’s bottom lip trembled slightly.
“We flew to the bear lands but they had been taken by those who had attacked us. So we flew here, uncertain if they had taken these lands too. But we find you thriving instead,” Yunho smiled with something that looked like relief.
“What happened? Could you not fend off the attackers?” Sungmin asked.
“We could do nothing. Our archers tried to pierce their armour with swords, spears and arrows. There is no effect. They burned our trees with their fire so they could attack more easily. Once we were free of the trees, they sprang. Those that were bitten succumbed in a day. Most of our battalions are gone. We have only managed to escape with our people because we can fly,” Jaejoong looked towards his lands.
“That is truly fearsome. Were they…chanting as they attacked?” Henry asked, sounding scared.
“They said something about a conquest while attacking us. It was quite terrifying,” Yunho answered.
“A conquest? The Conquest?” Henry prodded further.
“They chanted while they attacked,” Jaejoong’s tone was emotionless. It was obvious the attack had left the eagle shaken. “They said, ‘The Conquest! For the Conquest!’”
“What attacked you?” Jongwoon asked. Both Captains looked towards him. There was a long silence. Finally, Jaejoong answered the question.
“The dragons attacked us,” the bald eagle said. And at last, tears welled up in his eyes and splashed to the ground.

Yay! Stage five done! I hope you enjoyed that. Now the drama can start because in the next chapter, we see what happens to Ryeowook and how this changes things for the felines, canines, eagles and bears. And there might be an appearance of dragons, depending on how I feel or not. Sorry sorry it took me a week to get this done. I’ll update sooner! I promise!
