The Formphasers: Dirge of the Dragons

Stage Four: Escapees of the Conquest

“I can’t believe it,” Sungmin whispered. Kyuhyun glanced over at him. Sungmin had wandered into his office shortly after sunhigh and was sitting on the windowsill, staring out at the lush green lands.

“You can’t believe what?” Kyuhyun asked, setting down his pen and turning towards his mate.

“That dragons actually do exist. They are mythical creatures. They cannot become real. There is a reason for why we call stories, stories,” Sungmin’s voice grew slightly higher.

“And this is not only what concerns you. I am your mate. I know when you are troubled by more than trivial things such as whether stories are real or not,” Kyuhyun gazed calmly at his mate.

“The messenger told us that the bears had vanished and the palace was destroyed. Zhoumi and Henry…is it possible that they are alive? Or were they…” Sungmin couldn’t finish his sentence.

Zhoumi and Henry had been his friends since he was a kitten batting beetles in the air. They had known each other well since they had been brought to each other’s palaces in order to strengthen relationships for the future.

Sungmin smiled at the memory of a twelve year-old Henry clutching the arm of teenage Zhoumi, already betrothed to him and absolutely terrified of a spider that had managed to crawl up his leg.

“They would not be taken down so easily. Henry would destroy the palace if it threw the attackers off guard. Zhoumi definitely would have agreed to it if it saved his people,” Kyuhyun pointed out.

“Perhaps…but I can’t help thinking that they have been…” Sungmin trailed off.

“Kitten, neither Zhoumi or Henry would go down without a fight. Perhaps they are trying to reclaim their lands,” Kyuhyun tried. Sungmin looked at him, disbelief in his green eyes.

“After an attack like that, it is doubtful that they are,” Sungmin whispered. Kyuhyun stood up and walked to his mate’s side.

“They will be fine. Bears are strong,” Kyuhyun wrapped his arms around Sungmin and held him close. The feline looked up, tears forming. Sungmin desperately wanted to believe what Kyuhyun said.

“Don’t lie to me, Kyuhyun,” Sungmin whispered. He burrowed into the warm embrace, hoping to douse the uncertainties that he felt. The scent of Kyuhyun calmed him. He knew Kyuhyun was just as worried as he was, he could tell by the slight fear that was radiating off of his mate.

A soft cough came from the doorway. Ahra stood there, Junki on her hip. The two rulers parted and looked towards the door.

“I hope I am not disturbing you two?” Ahra said with a slight grin on her face. Kyuhyun made a face at his sibling.

“What do you want?”

“I want to know what we are doing about the current situation. Should we be preparing in case of attack?” Ahra asked. She set Junki down on the floor and allowed him to run around. Not surprisingly, he ran straight to Sungmin, clinging to his pant leg.

Sungmin picked up the small child and smiled. Junki always made him feel better. The coyote pup grinned, bearing his small pointed teeth.

“Min-Min, mother won’t allow me to have sweets! Will you allow me sweets?” Junki asked. For a five year old, he was quite demanding.

“If you’re good, perhaps you might earn yourself a sweet,” Sungmin murmured. Junki’s face lit up in a happy smile.

“Mother, Min-Min gives me candy! Why won’t you?” Junki pouted. Sungmin cuddled the small boy tighter. He was ridiculously adorable.

“You spoil my child and then he loves you more than me,” Ahra rolled her eyes. Kyuhyun looked towards his mate and Ahra’s son.

“It’s hard not to love Sungmin more than you,” Kyuhyun grinned. Then he ducked as Ahra aimed a blow towards his head.

“You are a sarcastic brat and it is harder to love you than it is to love me,” Ahra poked her brother.

“Sungmin does a pretty good job,” Kyuhyun retorted smugly.

“Why must you always bring me into your petty fights?” Sungmin asked, still cuddling Junki.

“Because we both love you unconditionally,” Ahra answered. Kyuhyun growled. Ahra pushed her brother away. “I’m not afraid of you. You know I was joking. I don’t actually love Sungmin the way you do.” Ahra rolled her eyes.

“You know Kyuhyun is protective. Why do you antagonize him so?” Sungmin asked.

“It is my purpose in life. I live to antagonize him, you live to keep him happy, Junki lives to laugh at him and I live to torture him. Are we clear?” Ahra smiled. Sungmin rolled his eyes.

“And just so your purpose here was not a complete waste, I will tell you that we am not planning to make any sort of move. If we managed to get more information or by some miracle a bear wanders into the city, perhaps we shall decide what to do,” Kyuhyun informed his sister.

“So we wait for now?” Ahra asked. Kyuhyun nodded.

“Until we have more understanding, we wait,” Sungmin confirmed.

“I asked because Youngwoon wanted to know. He is already making sure that everything is in place in case of attack. Perhaps his measures are a little overboard but he is being cautious.”

“That is good. There may come a time when we are thankful for his measures,” Kyuhyun said, agreeing with his sibling.

“Don’t say that,” Sungmin interrupted. He didn’t want to hear about it. War had been his life for most of his life. He didn’t want the rest of it to be about war.

“Don’t worry. We shall not go to war. Not if I can help it,” Kyuhyun promised.

!*!*!*!*!

Ryeowook lay asleep in the healing wing. For a long time, he had not had this dream. The last time he had had it, the canines and felines had been at war. But it was back again. And this had Ryeowook worried.

The ocelot trembled, looking around at the ruins of what used to be the Bear Territories. The mountains rose around him ominously. Ryeowook knew that the mountains were a good defence against intruders but once the attackers had gotten past the rocky outcrops, it was easy to be trapped. There was nowhere to hide on a mountain.

He moved forwards, looking around. He came to the palace of the bears. He gasped in shock. The messenger hadn’t lied. It was ruined. The windows had been smashed. The banners were ripped and torn and he could see flames licking the interior of the palace. No more would the rumours of the beautiful castle abound. Henry and Zhoumi’s home was destroyed.

He could smell the burning flesh and fur of those inside. Ryeowook began to sob softly. How could it be possible? Were they gone? He found himself moving towards one of the towns that housed. And what he saw shocked him.

There were bodies everywhere. Some were contorted into awful positions. Some were not even bodies but torn apart, blood pooling so thickly on the ground that there were puddles of the red liquid everywhere. He could see bodies on fire down the street, becoming no more than charred ashes. And from what he could see, all of them, every single one, was bitten to the point that the bears were almost unrecognizable.

Some bears had semi phased, their claws stretching towards an invisible enemy, even in death. Ryeowook continued looking. Buildings were collapsing on each other, homes were burnt to the ground, total devastation everywhere. The ocelot began to cry harder. Could anything have survived this?

Ryeowook turned to leave when he heard a noise, a slurping, wet sound. Despite his will not to listen to the sound, his feet dragged him in the direction of the noise. He walked into the darkness and looked around. His gaze landed on a sight not too far from where he was situated.

If he could have, he would have vomited on the spot.

A hunched figure was kneeling over the body of a dead panda. It was greedily gorging itself on the innards of the dead bear. It looked up, it’s face cloaked in shadows, gazing at Ryeowook. Then it smiled, blood dripping from its teeth. Ryeowook was paralyzed with fear.

The thing took off, running away from its meal. There was a soft rustle beside him and Ryeowook turned to see the bear they had found at the palace disappearing in the direction of the canine and feline lands. Then everything was quiet. And Ryeowook screamed.

!*!*!*!*!

Sungmin sighed. He wished he could have known what was happening in the bear lands. It pained him not to know what was happening to his friends. He wished he could have been there to help them. He lay on his and Kyuhyun’s bed, closing his eyes and waiting to hear that familiar scratching that signalled the door opening and Kyuhyun’s arrival.

Scritch. Scratch. Scritch. Scratch.

Sungmin’s eyes opened. That wasn’t the door opening. It was something else. Then a large crash came from the balcony outside. Sungmin jumped up and ran to see if there was anything there. A sun bear had toppled onto the balcony. It looked up and Sungmin recognized the backwards C marking on its forehead.

“Henry! You’re alive! What happened?” Sungmin asked, pulling the bear inside. Henry phased, hair dirty and looking as though he had been through a war and back. There was blood on his fingertips and he was half dead from exhaustion.

“Zhoumi…Zhoumi…the others, Sungmin-hyung. Please, bring them into the palace and give them nourishment…Zhoumi…please help him…” Henry begged. Sungmin’s eyes widened. There were more? The bears had survived? Henry gazed up at him, his eyes glazed over.

Sungmin looked over the edge of the balcony to see what looked like a quarter of the bear population and one bear being supported by two others. He looked back to Henry who was swaying lightly.

“You will be safe here,” Sungmin promised before he ran out of the room, Henry following close behind.

!*!*!*!*!

“Can you tell us of what attacked you?” Kyuhyun asked. Youngwoon, Jongwoon, Eunhyuk and Sungmin were assembled together to hear the story of the bears. The rest of the tribes had been taken care of, placed in various rooms around the palace.

Zhoumi lay on his back with Henry beside him, gazing at him worriedly. Henry had thought Zhoumi was in a worse condition than he actually was in. He had merely sprained his ankle instead of being bitten like Henry feared.

The Chieftains glanced at one another, conferring silently before Zhoumi answered.

“We were attacked by dragons,” the chieftain answered. Henry nodded.

“Dragons? Mythical creatures?” Sungmin asked. Henry shrugged.

“We are uncertain. We didn’t get a clear look at them. They attacked the palace first. We only managed to escape because when they crushed an archway, most of them were crushed along with it. They attacked the town of the Panda Tribe but some of them got away and they got to the Grizzly Tribe before we did and killed most of them. But the others we got to first and managed to get them out,” Henry said, shuddering slightly.

“How many of them were there?” Youngwoon questioned.

“I don’t know. It looked as if there were thousands. They kept coming and coming,” Zhoumi grimaced as he moved his leg slightly. Henry took the ice and pressed it to Zhoumi’s injury.

“What are their weapons? What did they use?” Jongwoon asked. Henry and Zhoumi exchanged another look before answering.

“They use swords but they have another weapon,” Henry started.

“They carry poison in their mouths. It kills in twenty four hours, a slow and painful death,” Zhoumi finished. Sungmin and Kyuhyun looked at each other. Both wondered the same thing. How could anyone carry poison in their mouths?

“One of the black bears had been bitten and died on the journey. He was screaming in agony during the last few minutes of his life. We could do nothing for him,” Henry looked sad at the mention of the dead bear.

“And are you certain of what attacked you?” Eunhyuk asked carefully.

“We are certain. They are dragons. The scaled tails are proof of what we have been attacked by,” Zhoumi confirmed.

“They lie on the ground and blend in with the surroundings. When we walked, they sprang up at us. They are masters of trickery,” Henry added.

“Do you know why they attacked you?” Youngwoon looked at the two Chieftains.

“They all chanted ‘The Conquest! For the Conquest’ while attacking us,” Zhoumi answered.

!*!*!*!*!

Phase four complete! Whew, that was intense! I didn’t kill Zhoumi and Henry. They already died once. So they’re good to be alive now. Hope you enjoyed that! I love you all!
