The Formphasers: Dirge of the Dragons
Stage Six: Dream of the Ocelot
Sungmin handed the damp cloth to Yunho who gently sponged Jaejoong’s face. The eldest Captain had fallen into a fever due to the smoke that had weakened his immune system and left him more delicate than he normally was.
Jaejoong had collapsed after questioning. According to the Kibum, he had contracted a sickness while flying. He had been drifting between wakefulness and sleep for the past few days. Yunho had been taken care of him, dutifully remaining by his mate’s side.
“If you do not require further assistance, I shall take my leave. Jaejoong will get better soon,” Sungmin murmured as he stood up. Yunho looked up at him, concern and a hint of fear in his eyes.
“His fever has not yet broken. Could you ask your healer for more medication?” Yunho turned back to his mate. Sungmin’s heart nearly broke from seeing the look of utter pain on the eagle’s face.
“I will ask Kibum to bring it to you directly,” Sungmin bowed to the monarch who dipped his head back and then quietly left the room. Jaejoong was one of the strongest people he had ever met. Now he was lying motionless on a sickbed.
Sungmin walked down the corridor of the sick wing in search for Kibum. The doctor was often found in his office, poring over papers with Siwon in the corner guarding him from possible harm.
The feline poked his head in the door, looking for the red wolf. He spotted Siwon walking down a hallway and ran towards him, knowing that if anyone knew the whereabouts of Kibum, it would be him.
“Siwon, have you seen Kibum? Yunho requests more medicine for Jaejoong and he wishes it be brought soon,” Sungmin told the guard.
“Kibum is in the storage room, looking for more medicine already,” Siwon smiled. Sungmin tilted his head to the side and looked at the timber wolf carefully.
“When is your mating ceremony?” Sungmin asked. Siwon immediately began coughing as he choked on air. Sungmin watched him, positive of his suspicions.
“Mating ceremony? Where on earth could you have possibly gotten that idea?” Siwon asked, gasping for air. Sungmin shrugged.
“Perhaps the fact that you stare at Kibum for hours on end? Or maybe because you guard him in his office even though there are four guards in the hallway and someone who wanted to hurt him would have to go through that hallway because there is no other way to his workplace. It could also be the way you look at him when you think nobody is watching,” Sungmin rattled off.
“He is a close friend,” Siwon amended. Sungmin rolled his eyes exaggeratedly.
“A close friend with benefits maybe?” The feline smirked. Siwon narrowed his eyes.
“You have become more like the brat Kyuhyun with every passing day. He is not a good influence on a kind creature like you,” Siwon sighed.
“It helps sometimes when I have to get an answer and some people won’t give me the answers I seek,” Sungmin gazed at the guard.
“What answers do you look for?” Sungmin could hear the wariness in his tones. Still, he pressed forwards.
“I want to know if you intend to make Kim Kibum your mate,” Sungmin asked bluntly. Siwon remained silent.
“Why do you wish to know this?” Siwon finally responded. Sungmin looked at him.
“Because I see the way you look at him and I see the way you watch him and I see the way you protect him and I see how you love him,” he answered.
“I have…not…” Siwon trailed off.
“You have not yet asked him?” Sungmin’s eyes opened wide. Siwon flushed a faint pink.
“Not…not…”
“Are you afraid to ask him?” Sungmin gaped. “You have fought in wars and battles and yet you cannot find it inside to ask the one you love to become your mate?!”
“I am not afraid to ask him. I am afraid that he will not accept,” Siwon confessed.
“Do not fear that. I would be the claws on my right paw that he will accept,” Sungmin nodded in earnest. “Ask him. It is unlikely that you shall be disappointed.”
“How unlikely?”
“Highly.”
!*!*!*!*!
Sungmin walked down the hallway and out onto a wide, spacious balcony that overlooked the gardens. He stopped for a minute, watching the beautiful flowers that bloomed in this place.
Then the scene changed. The bushes were charred and burnt. Some were still on fire and smouldering. Sungmin felt heat on his back and turned to look at what caused it. The door was blocked by large flames that consumed the interior of the palace and were reaching out for him.
Sungmin watched as servants and guards hurled themselves out of windows, some landing with unpleasant crunches against the earth. Some of them were on fire and screaming hysterically as they plummeted towards the ground.
Sungmin gazed with absolute horror as Kyuhyun threw himself from a window, his clothes scorched and his skin burned. Tears clouded the feline’s vision as Kyuhyun hit the ground and didn’t move. The fall had killed him.
There was a low guttural laugh to the right and he saw, with mounting terror, large hunched shapes moving in from all sides. The creatures burst from the flames and ran to the fallen figures on the ground.
With no hesitation, they threw themselves upon the helpless people and tore open their stomachs, eating their innards and strewing the flesh all over the once green grass. Scales covered their bodies and long tails twitched in the grass.
Sungmin couldn’t see their faces but just their presence alone was enough to unnerve him. He was in the presence of a terrifying predator. Sungmin tried to back away but as he did so, one of the creatures turned its head towards him with a speed Sungmin was sure would snap its neck.
It raised its bloodied snout, the rest of it in darkness and opened its mouth, long teeth covered in blood and bits of flesh. Sungmin was absolutely terrified. There was a crash as the archway from the balcony into the palace collapsed, weakened by the flames.
The figure walked towards him. Sungmin’s eyes opened wide. A hand, half covered in scales and with long frightening claws extended towards him. Sungmin screamed.
“Sungmin, what is it?!”
Sungmin blinked and the vision vanished. He fell backwards onto the stone balcony, feeling strong arms wrap around his body. He looked up into the face of Kyuhyun, unmarked and unburned. With shuddering sobs, he wrapped his arms around Kyuhyun’s neck and pulled him close.
“Kyuhyun…Kyuhyun…” Sungmin drew in shuddering breaths, his tears soaking the material of his mate’s shirt. Kyuhyun’s arms tightened.
“Kitten, what is it?” Kyuhyun asked, protective instinct kicking in as he wondered what could have possibly gotten Sungmin in this state. Whatever it was, he planned to have it removed from the kingdom immediately.
“It’s burned…destroyed…and you…you fell and they….they ate you…” Sungmin sobbed, pressing himself closer.
“What do you mean?”
“They invaded…and I lost you…I lost you!” Sungmin’s voice rose shrilly.
“You lost me?”
“You jumped from a window…you died when you landed…they came and ate you…” Sungmin shuddered.
“I’m here, Kitten. I’m here,” Kyuhyun tried to soothe his mate.
“They came and burned our kingdom with their fire,” Sungmin whispered, starting to calm down slightly.
“Don’t be scared of that. What their reasoning for taking the eagles and bears land is unknown. They have no reason to take our lands,” Kyuhyun stroked Sungmin’s hair lightly.
“It’s not an invasion I’m scared of,” Sungmin murmured, pulling back from Kyuhyun and gazing at him with tear filled eyes.
“Then what are you scared of?” Kyuhyun asked, reaching up and putting a hand on Sungmin’s cheek.
“I’m scared of losing you to them,” Sungmin answered, his eyes large and brimming with tears. Kyuhyun’s eyes softened and he gently pressed his forehead to Sungmin’s.
“I will never let that happen. I promise you that,” Kyuhyun breathed. A soft shuddering breath came from Sungmin’s mouth.
“Don’t give me promises you cannot keep,” Sungmin whimpered. He didn’t want Kyuhyun’s promise to turn into a lie. If Kyuhyun fell to these “dragons”…Sungmin didn’t even want to finish that thought.
“I will never make you a promise that I cannot keep,” Kyuhyun said firmly, leaning back and staring at Sungmin defiantly.
“You better not,” Sungmin smiled weakly. He brushed away a few tears as Kyuhyun leaned down. Their lips pressed together and Sungmin’s world sparked and sizzled. He was still alive, Kyuhyun was still alive and this kiss that ignited so much love inside of him was something that only Kyuhyun could do.
Sungmin pressed himself closer, trying to get ever nearer his mate. He began to purr, the effects of the vision fading from his consciousness. Kyuhyun broke the kiss and pulled Sungmin into an embrace, holding him tightly.
“I love you, Sungmin,” Kyuhyun whispered, holding his mate as close as he possibly could. Sungmin felt tears start again but for a better reason this time. His emotions bubbled inside of him.
“I love you too, Kyuhyun,” Sungmin nuzzled into Kyuhyun’s neck. The two of them remained there for a moment.
“I am so grateful for Jaejoong. His suggestion gave you to me,” Kyuhyun moved back and gazed directly into Sungmin’s eyes. The feline felt himself flush.
“Jaejoong is smarter than we thought,” Sungmin murmured.
“He told me about you. He told me that no child could be cuter than you. I thought he was merely exaggerating. When I saw you, I knew he was downplaying your looks,” Kyuhyun smiled.
“I hope I am not interrupting anything?” Jongwoon stood above the two monarchs, looking down at them, smirking.
“You have a tendency to interrupt everything,” Kyuhyun replied, standing up and pulling Sungmin up with him.
“Emperor Sungmin, are you well? You were on the ground.”
“I am fine, thank you. What is it you require of me?” Sungmin asked, leaning on Kyuhyun.
“My mate wishes an audience with the both of you. He says that he has something of utmost importance to speak to you about,” Jongwoon answered. Sungmin looked at Kyuhyun. Ryeowook wanted to talk to them?
“Then we shall go posthaste,” Kyuhyun decided. Jongwoon nodded.
!*!*!*!*!
“What did you wish to see us for?” Sungmin asked, sitting beside Ryeowook on his bed. The ocelot looked much better than he had before. His colour was back and he wasn’t as pale.
“I feel that I should have told you about something long ago. I may have been able to help more than I have been. I am ashamed that I could not speak about it before,” Ryeowook bowed his head. Sungmin placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Whatever it is, you may tell us. Do not be ashamed,” Sungmin smiled at his long time friend. Kyuhyun nodded his assent. Ryeowook looked down at the bedsheets. Ever since his panic attack he had been placed in this room to calm down. Jongwoon was often with him which helped. But telling the two monarchs about his dreams did not calm him at all.
“Ever since the end of the canine and feline war, I have been having dreams about attacks upon the kingdoms of the races here. At first, I thought they were just nightmares with no importance whatsoever.
“These dreams told of a race that was believed extinct but had survived. I watched the destruction of the kingdoms around us and the impending doom of ours. There was a voice that told me of what would happen, what was happening,” Ryeowook stopped to take a breath.
“What did that voice say?” Sungmin asked.
“It said, ‘From a race believed extinct, from the ashes they shall rise. Fire shall destroy the trees. Poison shall crush the mountains. Unless those of the forked tongue can be stopped, they shall rule the kingdoms. For they are strong. They are deadly. The dragons are here.’”
“What does that mean?” Kyuhyun demanded. Jongwoon glared at him. Nobody raised their voice to his Ryeowook.
“It means that the race we thought extinct was never gone to begin with. They are now attacking us for a reason we have no knowledge of. And if they cannot be stopped, they will rule all the lands that were once ruled by different races. The dragons really did attack the eagles and bears.”
“That’s why I was so scared when I saw the dead bear. I saw those bites and I knew that the dreams weren’t just in my sleep. They had become reality and the horrors I saw were true. So when I saw the downfall of the eagles, I knew I had to tell you that the dragons are real,” Ryeowook concluded.
“I too had a vision like that,” Sungmin mumbled. He felt Kyuhyun’s gaze on him.
“You did?” the wolf asked.
“Yes. That’s why I was crying on the balcony. Fire consumed our lands. The gardens were burned and the palace was on fire. Servants and guards were throwing themselves out of the windows. I saw you jump…and you died…” Sungmin’s breath caught. Tears were starting to fall once again. Kyuhyun ran his hand down Sungmin’s arm and pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
“Then because the two of you had similar visions, we can assume that they are now true,” Jongwoon said.
“So it is not just a figment of the imagination. Dragons really do exist,” Sungmin murmured. He had suspected it ever since Jaejoong and Yunho arrived with the same story. He had no idea what to do.
“We should prepare ourselves. Double the border patrols and get the blacksmiths to create more armour. Females and males alike should have armour,” Kyuhyun decided. Jongwoon nodded.
“I agree with that. I think we should also-” but he was cut off by the arrival of Siwon.
“Alpha Kyuhyun and Alpha Mate Sungmin, there is a messenger at the gate for you. We picked him up on one of our patrols. Eunhyuk is restraining him,” Siwon panted. Sungmin and Kyuhyun looked at each other.
“If he is a messenger, why does Eunhyuk restrain him?” Kyuhyun asked.
“He claims to be from the dragons. And he has a message for you,” Siwon replied.
