So, my little kid with autism? The one who at age 4 couldn't answer an open-ended question if his life depended on it? The one who couldn't sit still or focus or follow rules or verbalize or respond in a timely manner? Just won first runner-up in the sixth grade Geography Bee. Out of about 330 sixth graders. Narrowed down to 17 social studies class champions. Narrowed down to a tiebreaker between 6 kids. Yes, he competed in his own inimitable fashion, alternately causing me to groan or giggle. But he won runner up, just one point away from the champion. I am so proud.
