Pffffffft ... Vancouver Farted

Jan 05, 2007 15:48

The world's largest air-supported dome stadium went 'poof' at noon today.
The 'marshmallow' has dominated our skyline since 1983 and is known as "BC Place" seating 60,000 spectators for football games, concerts and other events. No one was hurt and the teflon-coated fabric & cable roof is suspended in reverse without touching the seats or field.

Vancouver is experiencing very weird weather this winter - with unaccustomed wind storms flattening part of Stanley Park a couple of weeks ago. Chris (cobalt999) and his lovely mother were visiting us for a few days until yesterday - and actually got to see a bit of sun and the mountains between rainstorms. But this morning we had snow again and the dome ripped and farted. Within minutes the dome had sunk into the stadium cavity and disappeared from view. Our condo looks out on it - so now we get to see another 20 or so glass highrise buildings (Nick will be so pleased!) ;-)

Happy New Year to you all -
