"What are you making?" Cally said, having come into the kitchen, Nicky in her arms. She had been planning on getting him a couple crackers as a reward. He was standing on his own now. Not walking, no. If he had to move, he plopped down and started crawling again. But walking would be soon, she thought. Stepping, at least.
"I'm glad to be around," Piper said, the smile not disappearing for awhile. "And I'm so glad you're here, too. Getting to spend time with you was one of the reasons I took the teaching job."
"If I had had any way of getting out before I did, I would have," Cally said. "But now it's... okay, it's not all behind me, that'd be impossible. But being here has been a big improvement."
"Cookies will do," Cally said. "Would you like a little bit, huh boy?" She was making adorable faces at Nicky. "But only after they cool, no letting you burn yourself."
She looked over at Piper again. "By the way, don't ever get married."
Out of the blue, yes. But something she felt the need to say.
"I haven't smelled anything this nice in ages."

She looked over at Nicky's face. "Forget I ever said that, not that you understand this yet."

"Don't worry,I'll be making actual dinner soon. Just felt compelled to make cookies," she continued, not revealing the reason why.

"I know I've said this already, but... it's really nice having you around, Piper."
