Oops.  So I apologize for any typos or timeline mishaps since I haven't had time to proofread and didn't have my timeline chart for this universe on me at the time

Out of the corner of her eye Kahlan spotted the familiar leather clad form of her friend. It seemed almost odd for Kahlan to think back on how her relationship with Cara had started but now she couldn't think of how her life would have been without the blonde woman. The warm sun of the spring beat down upon them as her daughters played in the grass. Now that spring was here Kahlan felt at ease.
"Cara!"

The sound of her youngest daughter drew Kahlan's attention away from the little boy in her lap. She looked up from her son just in time to see Cara walking towards her. Kayla ran over towards Cara and wrapped her arms around the Mord'Sith's legs. In one swift movement Cara lifted up the squealing four year old and hoisted her over her shoulder.

"Caraaaa," Kayla squealed as she struggled in Cara's arms.

"Kahlan have you seen Kayla?"

She couldn't help but laugh as she shook her head. "No I haven't, Cara." Her daughter giggled again in response as Kahlan shifted little George on her lap when he started tugging on her hair.

Cara shook her head. "Neither have I and it's a shame. I'll ask Richard."

"She's right there," Lyra protested while pointing up at her sister. The girl seemed unable to control the giggles falling from her lips.

Kahlan smiled and bounced her son as he babbled happily in her arms. At only four months old he wasn't even very aware of the happenings of his mother, sisters, and the woman who would be like an aunt to him. "Are you sure, Lyra?" When the little girl nodded fervently Kahlan glanced up at Cara. "Cara would you put my daughter down please?"

Cara rolled her eyes in an exasperated manor before setting the giggling girl down. "There you go, Kayla."

The littlest Rahl looked between her mother and Cara as a smile appeared on her lips. "Mommy, how did you and Cara meet?"

Kahlan pulled her lower lip between her teeth as she thought over her answer. However, before she could formulate a reply, Cara's voice was filling her ears. She could barely wrap her mind around the story Cara could tell before the Mord'Sith's words registered in her mind.

"She and your father saved my life." The girls looked up at them both with awe written all over their expressions. "It's true," Cara reassured them.

"How?" This time it was Lyra who voiced the question. It brought smiles to both women's faces as they were there together in the garden.

Kahlan reaches out and tucked one of her daughter's raven curls back behind her ear with a slight smile. "Cara was hurt and your father found her. She's been with us since then." Of course the gory details of both what happened to Cara and the quest for the Stone of Tears were not something Kahlan felt her daughters were old enough to handle. She was grateful that Cara had enough sense to realize that as well.

"And we've been friends ever since," Cara joked with a roll of her eyes.

Kahlan shot Cara a look which caused both the young girls to erupt into a fit of giggles.  “No we haven’t,” Kahlan stated simply.  “Cara and I didn’t always get along.”

“But you do get along,” Lyra interrupted.

She smiled down at her daughter and nodded.  “Now we do but in the beginning we hated each other.  It just goes to show you that sometimes your greatest enemy can become your greatest ally.”

Cara nodded and placed her leather covered hands on the shoulders of each little girl.  “Your mother is right about that,” she said softly.  “You never know where friendship will come from.  You have to keep your eyes open to it.”

The girls nodded a little even though Kahlan could tell they were slightly confused.  “Will you play tag with us, Cara?”

The blonde scrunched up her face in mock disgust before shaking her head.  “Mord’Sith don’t play.”

Kahlan’s slender eyebrow rose on her forehead as she looked up at her friend.  “Come on Cara.  You can.”  As she watched her friend, Kahlan saw her mind spinning before she took off to another side of the garden, her daughters trailing after the Mord’Sith.  “I knew you could,” she smiled while watching her two youngest daughters and the woman who loved them like an aunt would.  It was amazing, something Kahlan never would have pictured when she first met Cara, but she knew in her heart that she wouldn’t change this for anything in the world.  They were a family, no matter how unconditional and it was perfect.
