legendland and the challenge were one or two characters gets displaced into the Midlands.
“Well everything seems clear,” Evan said when the pulled up to the large warehouse that appeared to be housing the anomaly, or at least that was how it seemed on the detector. There were no broken down doors or people screaming so maybe they’d made it there before anything came through.
Dylan sighed as she parked the car before glancing over at him. “Looks can be deceiving.” It was true and neither one of them wanted to be caught off guard. They stepped out of the car and grabbed the tranquilizer rifles before walking cautiously towards the looming building before them.
They were on high alert as they entered the warehouse but a quick scan of the room showed no signs that anything had been disturbed. “I think we lucked out,” Evan said as he turned his attention back to the anomaly detector in the hopes of getting a reading for the timer. “I don’t think anything came through.” Even if nothing had come through it didn’t hurt to know how long they’d be babysitting the thing in order to make sure everyone stayed safe. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted Dylan moving away from him towards some of the stacked boxes against a wall. “Be careful, Dylan.”
He heard her gasp and quickly turned around. “Evan, I wouldn’t be so sure nothing came through that anomaly.” There was something about the ton of her voice that had him worried.
Quickly he crossed the room towards her not even wanting to think about what could be waiting for them. What he found though was not what he had expected. Right there on the floor was a little girl no more than three years old. She was looking up at the two of them with big brown eyes as her raven hair fell in waves around her face. For a moment Evan was simply captivated. The look of the dress the girl was wearing worried him though. It was a medieval style. Obviously this little child had come through the anomaly.
Dylan crouched down beside the girl and offered her a reassuring smile. “What’s your name, Sweetie?”
The little girl looked around and wiped at her tear stained face. “Where’s Mommy?”
“We will find your Mommy,” Dylan reassured the girl. “What’s your name?”
Evan couldn’t help but smile as he watched Dylan interact with the girl. It was adorable and he couldn’t help but be awestruck by her ability to handle the child. Obviously she would make a fantastic mother someday. “Odette,” the little girl said as Evan crouched down to join Dylan. He nodded before glancing over at the woman beside him.
“How did you get here?” There was desperation in Dylan’s voice and Evan understood why. He glanced down at the anomaly detector and sighed. They had twelve hours until the anomaly would close. If that little girl had come through it they wouldn’t have much time.
Odette seemed to think for a moment or two before pointing over at the anomaly. “The magic light,” she said softly. “I wanna go home.”
Dylan nodded before reaching out to pull the child, who looked on the verge of tears, into her arms. “We will take you home,” she insisted before rising to her feet with Odette held against her chest. Her eyes met Evan’s and he nodded. They both knew what needed to be done. They couldn’t just send her through the anomaly and hope she found her home again. Too many variables could come into play and neither one of them were willing to risk those odds.
Odette held tightly to Dylan’s neck when she stood up and Evan continued watching them. “Stay close to me, Dylan.” He took a few steps towards the anomaly and held his tranquilizer rifle ready.
She smiled a little before shifting Odette to her hip, her rifle hanging from the strap over her back. “Her clothes are medieval. I don’t think we need to worry about utahraptors,” Dylan teased.
He smiled slightly. “But still. Be careful,” Evan said before stepping through the anomaly. Dylan was surely right behind him.
“What in the name of all creation,” Evan heard an old man gasp as he appeared on the other side of the anomaly. His eyes scanned the trees briefly before he was met with a completely excruciating pain in his side. A scream tore from his lips just in time for him to hear Dylan gasp at the sight of him crumpled over in pain.
“Odette!”
Evan turned towards the sound even as he felt as though he would die from the pain consuming his body. He saw the swish of a white skirt briefly before the pain suddenly receded. His head was swimming from the sensation but he heard a grunt behind him followed by a gasp. “Dylan,” he cried before turning towards her where a blonde woman dressed in blood red leather was pressing a slender rod to Dylan’s side. The look of pain on Dylan’s face made it clear that whatever was going on seemed to be quickly spiraling out of control.
“That’s enough,” snapped a man with a sword strapped to his hip and chestnut brown hair falling in his eyes. Evan watched him pull the blonde off Dylan. “Cara stop.”
The blonde rolled her eyes as he rushed over to Dylan’s aid. He put his hand on his arm and turned her to look at him. “Are you okay?” When she nodded he sighed and looked up at the people towering above them. The blonde woman and the man with the sword were accompanied by an older man dressed in robes as well as a dark haired woman in a white dress. Odette was in the woman’s arms and Evan could tell right away that she was the girl’s mother. The features were so similar. Odette was the spitting image of her mother, save for the eyes. “What’s going on here?”
“What were you doing with Lord and Lady Rahl’s daughter?” Cara’s voice held a sharp edge to it as she brandished her agiel threateningly. Evan moved slightly in front to Dylan before daring to speak.
His eyes met her green ones and he swallowed hard. “We found her on the other side of the anomaly,” Evan stated as simply as possible before gesturing towards the shimmering sphere of light. “If she had stayed on the other side she would have been trapped it the anomaly closed. Now that’s she’s back home we will be on our way.”
Next to him Dylan nodded. “He’s right. We just wanted to make sure she got home. I could only imagine you would have really missed her.”
Kahlan nodded and looked over at Richard. “They’re telling the truth.” When she spoke Cara holstered her agiels as Richard offered Evan a hand up from the ground. Evan couldn’t quite wrap his mind around the sudden turn of events but he wasn’t about to complain. Situations change too quickly to brush off the good moments like these. He didn’t want to do that.
“Sorry about that,” Richard said once Dylan and Evan were both standing before him. Evan’s gaze darted around from person to person before scanning the scenery quickly. “Thank you for bringing our daughter home to us.” Kahlan stepped up beside Richard and Evan watched as the pair interlaced their fingers, Kahlan still holding Odette against her right hip.
Dylan smiled at them and nodded. “It’s not a problem,” she replied while Evan still seemed to be grasping for a response. “We just wanted to see her home safe.”
“But what is this powerful magic,” Zedd interrupted with a flamboyant wave of his hands in the direction of the anomaly. Considering the time period it shouldn’t have surprised him that magic was the obvious assumption for the older man to make. It just made his overly scientific brain grimace each time the term was used.
Evan pinched the bridge of his nose between his forefinger and thumb with a sigh. “It’s not magic,” he said softly. “It’s the magnetic pulses created by impact of colliding four dimensions.” The science behind anomalies was simple to him and after so many years studying them he often forgot that it wasn’t that simple for other people.
Zedd gave Evan a skeptical look. “I am Zeddicus Zul’ Zorander, Wizard of the First Order and I know magic when I see it,” he exclaimed. “This is definitely magic!”
Evan looked from Zedd to Richard, Kahlan, Cara and finally Dylan before sighing. “It’s science. It’s not magic. There is no such thing as magic,” he stated mater of factly. However as soon as he said it he saw the looks on Richard, Kahlan, and Cara’s faces shift. The brunette woman set Odette down and his lips twitched up into a slight smile when she wandered over towards Dylan once again.
“I don’t know where you came from,” Kahlan said calmly as she came to stand right before him. “But magic is real here. It’s a part of our lives and our society.” His blue eyes met hers and he suddenly felt intimidated by the woman in front of him, as though she could destroy him if she wanted to. It was that same feeling he got whenever Ange was in one of her moods that always managed to get him back in the office working on prototypes instead of back out in the field. It was intimidating but he’d never tell her that.
Richard came up beside Kahlan and rested his hand on the small of her back. “I suggest you listen to the Mother Confessor.” Evan didn’t like the feeling of being judged but on this side of the anomaly he felt very out of his element. There was only so much he could do to keep himself from somehow causing offense. The last thing he wanted was to end up on the wrong end of the blonde’s agiel once again.
Dylan nodded and placed her hand on Evan’s forearm. “Of course. Evan didn’t mean any offense,” she apologized on his behalf. “Things are just…different for us here. We really should get back to our home now that Odette is safe.” They both knew that the longer they spent on this side of the anomaly the greater the risk for altering the timeline. Neither one of them would have wanted that.
Kahlan nodded. “Of course. I just wish there was some way to thank you for bringing our daughter home.”
Evan smiled at her and shook his head. “There is no need to thank us,” he assured her. “We were just trying to make sure everyone is back where they belong.” He glanced over at Richard and met the man’s brown eyes which he obviously passed down to his daughter. “Just make sure no one goes through it once we leave. It should close in about twelve hours.”
“We can do that,” Richard replied with a nod. “Thank you.”
Dylan smiled and took hold of Evan’s hand. He squeezed it in response before looking over all the faces of people standing there. “We should go,” Dylan said softly before looking over at Odette. She reached out and ruffled the little girl’s dark locks before smiling. “Be good for you mom.”
Odette rested her head on Kahlan’s chest just as Dylan and Evan turned back around to face the anomaly. This was one of the good days. They managed to make a difference and reunite a child with her family. Had they not been there things would have ended differently so Evan was glad today was a check mark in the win column. “Let’s go home,” he said to Dylan before they stepped through the shimmering portal. Home was just on the other side, right where it belonged.
