duckie

So, tonight I was on a date with a guy that I met online (this was our third date). We were at a man made lake by a hotel in Rohnert Park talking and after we got kicked out of where we were sitting by the sprinklers we started walking back to the car and saw an injured duck. The lake has a bunch of wild ducks and geese running around and they are extremely brave. A bunch of them were crossing the busy street and standing in the middle of the road. Thats besides the point though. We both felt really bad for the duck and didn't want to leave it there with an apparent broken leg. We started calling all over the place to find a 24 hour vet that would take it, but we had no luck. I tried the wildlife rescue and the bird rescue and they were both closed (it was 11:00 at night). Our only option at that point was to leave it there and call the wildlife rescue in the morning and hope that they could find it again. Neither of us were in a situation to take the duck in even just for a night and we both felt bad for leaving it there, but I'm going to call the rescue place in the morning and hopefully get it cared for. I really hope they can help it and find it, poor thing.

UPDATE: I called the wildlife rescue this morning and when they called me back they said that since they couldn't be sure the duck was still there they wouldn't go and look for it (which I understand since its run by volunteers). They said that if I wanted to go out there and look for it I should and if I found it I should call the bird rescue. So, I went out there and I found the duck pretty easily. After I was sure it was the right one I backed off so it wouldn't fly away and I called bird rescue. I waited for about an hour for the woman to get there making sure the duck didn't go into the water or anywhere else. My efforts were foiled by the duck though. As soon as the bird rescue woman got there and started taking thins out of her car the duck started walking towards me (I tihink there must have been an easy route to the water there) and when my dad went to climb on the rocks to prevent it from going into the water it flew over his head into the water. At that point there was nothing we could do. I think the duck must have sensed we were going to catch it or something though. The woman said that its a good sign that he could fly and swim. That means that he should be able to dive and get food and also that there are plenty of one legged birds so he should be able to fend for himself. Its too bad that the bird foiled my plans to help it right at the end, but I'm glad that it seems like it will be okay.
