my mini fender bender fiasco

Two weeks ago I got into a mini fender bender. I was going to pick up Bodhi (my dog) from his girlfriends house and it occurred in their horrible driveway. Their driveway is really steep and it has a weird parking situation. It is narrow at the start and then widens up toward the top. It's kinda hard to picture if you haven't seen it, but oh well. Anyway, I had just pulled into the driveway and turned off the car and just as I turned my head to the side I saw someone seemingly out of nowhere backing down the driveway toward the road. I stayed in the car since it looked like it might be a tight fit for her in her big truck and it turned out that she couldn't get all the way by me. She got a little bit behind me and then stopped since she couldn't go any further. She stopped and stayed there while I went to pull a little forward so she could get by. The problem was that I was in my grandma's car (mine was in the shop) and apparently the braking system works differently. As I wen to pull forward the car went slightly back before it wen forward and it went back just enough to hit the other person's truck. If I was in my car or any other car I've driven it would have never rolled back like that. Automatics aren't supposed to do that. I guess I should have done that thing where you keep one foot on the brake and ease off it as you accelerate forward, but I didn't think I would need to do that since I wasn't used to that occurring. What I think is stupid is that the other person decided to stay in the same spot that they were in, obviously not very far away from my car if I hit them by sliding back only a couple inches. If I was in her situation I would have pulled forward back to my original position and let the other person either back down the driveway to let them out or pull forward a little. What is frustrating is that I found out today that the insurance company decided it was my fault (even though the other person didn't move their ass) and also that it's on my grandparent's insurance since they do it by the car and not the driver. I feel really bad that it was their car and their insurance and I'm hoping it doesn't make their rates go up. Neither car got very damaged, but surprisingly enough my grandparent's little hybrid made more damage to the truck than the truck did to it. The truck got dented and the hybrid got a panel pushed out a little. Overall, I guess it's a learning experience but an extremely frustrating one.
