here's a great TED talk given by National Geographic Director of Photography, David Griffin, on the power of photography. it's only 14 minutes and includes some great examples and stories about excellent photojournalism. i tried to embed it in the LJ post but the TED website code never works right in LJ.

I've found there are many things in this world that are positively uninspiring until the last few minutes of the day, when the sun's final rays strike and light them up as if with a holy fire, surrounded by a sea of quiet darkness.

i'm finally starting to get back into the groove with my photography but i can't seem to get acceptable quality from the photo lab i've been using here. it's very frustrating. i paid for the highest quality scans possible on my last roll of film and they all came back "fuzzy" and un-sharp. i got better scans in Korea for 1/3 of the cost. dammit ( Read more... )

i find it much easier to decipher the visual world of America. i can effortlessly "read" what i'm seeing. things are more familiar and less exotic. i Know this is going to have an effect on my photography. it will be interesting to see what that is.
