new ways of seeing
*52-08: i came upon this scene a few weeks ago and it wasn't immediately apparent to me what i was seeing. i knew that i was seeing Something but it was so different from the images that i usually make that i had a hard time knowing what to do with it. on that occasion i ended up waiting and eventually making one photograph with a man walking down the path . a few days later, when the negatives were developed and i saw the results, i could suddenly See the image that was in this scene, in a way that had been difficult for me to understand at the time i had been making the photo. but the core of this image was an uninhabited one - the man in the photo did not belong there.
one week later i was fortunate enough to have similar weather and light conditions, so i returned to the location at just about the same time of day and rephotographed it. when i got there i was almost unable to make the photograph because of a mechanical problem with my camera but fortunately it was able to be resolved. on that same day, after i was finished, i went on to make these images also:
and in the following days i made images like these:
...which in my mind all seem to contain similar ideas and treatments. but it started with the image above.
