Indy and Pictures

Got to see Indiana Jones today - it's a little different, but who can resist anything with Indy in it?

In other news, pictures from my trip!

This is in the plaza, where there's a little park. The building behind is I believe the Orehouse and the Plaza Cafe, two restaurants that we didn't eat at but passed a lot.

This is also in the plaza. It's a monument, dedicated in the 1800s to the men of Santa Fe who fought the Native Americans, who are referred to as "savages" and "rebels." This was the attitude towards them when the monument was made 150 years ago.

Pigeons and the stage on the plaza. The building to the left is the Palace of the Governors, the [very] old capital building. The new capital is further away from the old part of town.

The adobe building in the background with the bell tower is the New Mexico Museum of Fine Art. On the left is the Bank.

You may think this is just leaves, but look closer.

A stream at Bandelier National Monument, where the main things to see are the 2000 year old Native American cliff dwellings.

This is called a kiva. It was built around 100 AD, and was used in Native American rituals. The ladder leads down into a little room of sorts. This was actually in a ceremonial cave that we had to climb up to on (terrifying) wooden ladders. Basically, there were steps and wooden ladders up the side of a cliff face, and this is in a hole in the cliff face. Those are the tops of huge pine trees and the side of the opposite wall of the canyon you see in the (washed out) background.

More of the cave. The little hole there was also used in the ceremonies performed here. This was a huge cave - what is shown in the picture is only about a fourth of it. The ground is covered in rocks and fine sand, and when the wind blew it created a sort of funnel and the sand picked up a around the cave in a half circle.

Another game of hide and seek. There's actually a deer in this stand of trees - she was just lazing around eating and barely glanced at us as we passed by. I'm not sure if you can see her here.
That's all for now. I may have more whenever we get the camera developed - this was all done with my phone.
