Sometimes it's good NOT to talk

Jul 31, 2005 23:44

I'm awake and highly caffeinated, so I decided to think of something to post about.

Why do people talk during gigs? I don't mean turning to a mate and going "hey, they're really good, aren't they?" or "I love this song!", I mean having full-blown conversations.

I went to see Gravenhurst at the Wheatsheaf in Oxford on Friday night. It's a little room upstairs at a pub, and probably has a capacity of about, ooh, a hundred and fifty? (I don't know, I can't judge these things). EDIT: it's 120, I've since discovered.

When half of those people decide to have full-blown conversations, it gets bloody loud. Loud enough to make it quite difficult to listen to the band. And if I can't hear the band properly when I'm intently listening to them, how can these other people be paying any attention when they're trying to make out what their mate Nigel is saying? It's not just at the tiny venues either, this happens at the Zodiac quite a bit too.

If people want some background music for their conversation, can't they just put a CD on and leave me to listen to the band in peace?

Okay, rant over.
