Got the last of the teeth drilling done this morning. It wasn't anywhere near as miserable as the last week's installment. The dentist is very nice, and despite my ranting over the pain last week, he has been very gentle. I'm trying to talk my husband (who has a 4-can-of Mt. Dew-a-day habit) into going in, but he's so fearful over my cavity stories that he is currently adopting an "ignorance-is-bliss" policy. But then, to be fair, it's the second busiest time of year for him, since he works in the dorms and all the students are getting ready to leave.
Haven't heard anything back yet from either of the jobs I was hopeful about. I am wanting to email them, but for the one at the museum my advisor used to work at, the email address to submit to was just a generic city application one. So I may contact the museum itself tomorrow and see what they have to say.
Not a whole lot else going on. Had fun last night with
buzzermccain and
unforth, eating tasty food that buzzermccain made and playing DDR. And later, gaming with buzzermccain and her boyfriend, and showing them the magnificent Stephen Colbert video. We have mucho horror movies over here--we just watched Hostel a couple of nights ago (which I feel like a somewhat lesser human being for having seen, although there was much relatively righteous and violent vengeance wreaked throughout the movie, which was very satisfactory on the gnomish scale of things), and we also have Dark Water and Undead from the video store. Not to mention the stuff we already own. I'm just glad I was able to talk J out of buying a copy of "Santa's Slay" at the video store... So anyway, if any of you people would like to come over for a horror-flick extravaganza, we're your folks.
I'm getting worried about Schrodinger the amputee hamster. He is not eating very much (although he is still interested in food and will take it and hoard it and nibble very small bits off it), and his upper half is skinny and his lower half is bloated. I am worried that he might be constipated. What a dignified ailment...as if this little dude hasn't gone through enough already. I did some checking and everywhere says to try and make sure he is getting enough moisture. One site also recommended feeding a drop of vegetable oil to try and lube things up. I really wish the vet who treats hamsters at our vet clinic hadn't just left...
So clearly, nothing much is really going on here. We're pretty much in a state of limbo. I've been reading a very interesting s/f book called Fitzpatrick's War that is pretty good most of the time, but is currently incredibly depressing. It's written in the style of an academically annotated memoir, set in the post-apocalyptic 26th century, when the Yukon Confederacy has pretty much taken over the world. The man from whose perspective it is told was a friend of a great political figure (the Fitzpatrick of the title) and is telling his story about Fitzpatrick's various insanities and of his own "inappropriate degree of affection for his wife", while the academic whose footnotes are present is scandalized by a lot of what he is saying. It has a tendency to drive its point home with a sledgehammer and to get overly preachy at times, but it does provide some food for thought. However, as I said, the current chapter is pretty depressing.
Speaking of depressing, what a lot of crap going on in the large-scale real world. Too much to rant about here, but so much of it stems from the current administration's bad calls. I know that people who voted these assholes in are now reaping their just rewards...but those of us who voted against them are reaping them not-so-justly, which totally sucks. I'd love to bitch more about this, but right now I don't have the energy.
Anyway, that's about it from the closetgnome this week. More to come if anything exceptionally exciting (i.e. a call from one of the jobs) occurs. And hopefully I'll see some of you local folks at Rhonda's BBQ tomorrow! Should be fun.
