I've wanted to be a volunter escort over the summer while I was home during summer break, however, I've been wondering about security. My mother and boyfriend in particular, have been very apprehensive about the idea of me being an escort amidst "fundamentalist psycho protesters". My mom's always been scared about my pro-choice activities, but I've never had problems.

As far as security measures...there really aren't any at my clinic. We don't give the protestors our real names, of course, but beyond that, nada. We used to take photos of the protestors until one of them flipped out and assaulted an escort (took that bastard to court), and we do have a "protestor profile book" in order to keep track of who comes and who goes.

Just out of curiousity, what made you stop escorting at Dr. Slepians former clinic?

different clinics have different setups. some clinics have security guards for on-site protection, but not all clinics can afford that.

otherwise, there are precautions that the escorts can take themselves both on site and at home by paying attention your surroundings and the antis that come out.

the profile book thing is a good idea. also things like knowing the antis names, car makes, etc, so you can recognize them in other places is useful. i have known people to have run-ins with protesters in their workplaces or in other public places, and had to hide or take other action.

another thing we do is always scan the premises for unusual-looking things that might be disguished bombs or for snipers in surrounding locations. this is pretty intense, and some people say too paranoid, but i think in situations concerning abortion, it's better to be safe than sorry.

It really depends on the clinic. I've never heard of an escort being seriously harmed, though.

I've been "out" to our protestors since I stood up and spoke at one of their events. I was 7 months pregnant at the time, so I was safe :) But anyway they know my name and everything now. No problems.
