Robert Freakin' Jordan!

I admit it, I've got every Wheel of Time book. The series started incredibly, and had the potential for amazingness. The man has an attention for detail and weaving plotlines....but it's gotten out of hand.

I don't mind someone carrying on with a series. Discworld has gone through some major shifts, but stayed true to its roots. Xanth was great for the first nine or so, but started getting really stupid and really fixated on sex that the characters aren't allowed to have.

Early on, you're told that "the Wheel of Time turns, and has seven spokes, with each one an age"...naturally you're thinking it will be seven books plus the inevitable spinoff stories, right?

We're at book ELEVEN and only now are plotlines being sewn up and things alluded to before being explained. There's no real reason for this, aside from money.

Someone got to Mr. Jordan and told him how much more money could be made by adding material to this original series, told him that the spinoffs never sell as well. He bought it, took the big bag of money, and god only knows when this will end.

It'll be interesting to see how J.K. Rowling handles this problem. Publishers are undoubtedly begging her to lengthen the series, but all accounts point to her sticking to the seven. Will she throw in some books about the further adventures of Ron or Herminone after Year Seven?

Stay tuned, folks.
