Behavioral Changes: Lifestyle changes to avoid Sleep Apnea

Apr 08, 2010 15:04

Sometimes, when we reach a certain age, we are struck by events in our lifetimes that compel us to change our lifestyles. It is akin to someone stopping smoking to avoid strokes, or COPD. Well, there is one constant in life that we cannot do anything to stop: Aging. And, as we age, we see changes to our body: our resistance to diseases drops, we develop wrinkles and a “double-chin”, etc.
We can make the same case for sleep apnea, and this does not necessarily mean we have to wait until we are old to make these lifestyle changes. For instance, we all know the ravages of over eating because it results in obesity and possible cardiac arrest. A few simple rules are all that needs to be followed to avoid Sleep Apnea, and they actually make sense: Controlling you weight, Stop smoking, Knowing the correct position to sleep, Avoiding alcohol, and minimizing the use of sleeping pills.
