Dark Kaberet had some really great acts. Eric McFadden is fucking amazing and sort of an up-tempo, American Nick Cave. Bob Hartman is what happens when that old dude from Family Guy did a puppet show but without the pedophile overtones. Amy Lavere is a darling bell of a singer and amazing in every right. John Gilkey and Frank Olivier were wonderful performers in their own ways. And hooray for corsets from Dark Garden!
But Paul Nathen, the MC and producer of the night, is a fucking Douchebag.
I had issues getting a ticket as the website only uses PayPal. Couldn't use my normal credit card due to PayPal being crap and used another one. Show up for the event and there are two tickets in my name. Since I made two attempts to go to PayPal though their website, they apparently counted paid customer by sending people to Paypal, regardless of a finished payment or not. Then they tried to seat the three of us... to have our seats filled already. Listening in on the banter from the staff of the show and the venue, apparently the producer made his own seating plan that bore no resemblance to the venue's. Lovely. We end up siting near each other, but not next to.
The show started with Eric McFadden and an awesome start. After a brief intro by Paul into a performance by Frank Olivier who's a juggler that plays up the incompetent act for better use of comedy. After he was done, the show took a disastrous turn. The MC, Paul, decided to attempt card tricks. Attempt is really the key word here. All of his trick failed. At first you think he too was doing the "LOL I'm bad but is this your card!" act that just preceded him, but then you realize that he really fucked up his own trick. Bad Bad Bad.
From there on, any time the MC shows up, it's tragedy. When he leaves, it's awesome. As he introduces the last act, he tells the audience that didn't pay the $75 seats that the seats were messed up because we were freeloaders and blaming someone else for the seating arrangement. To which that woman yells back with "You made the seating chart asshole!"
