My Mom: ESRB Spokeswoman

Nov 18, 2007 22:51

Tonight while I was at my Berkeley office writing the glut of tonight's LJ posts, my mother called with a very interesting story.

A few days ago she was getting her hair done with Kara's mom. The shop topic of conversation turns to Christmas gifts. Eventually a lady says "My grandkids want video games, but all of them are so violent." Then my mother says something that I would never dream of happening, but makes perfect sense.

"My son makes video games for a living and none of the games he makes are violent." She goes on to talk about Sam & Max that are no worse than Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons for violence. The lady writes down the Telltale Games URL and says she'll look into buying Sam & Max.

My mother has become a better spokesperson for non-violent video games than the ESRB. I can't wait to tell everyone at work tomorrow.

I didn't want to ruin the moment by mentioning that she was wrong about me playing too much SNES years ago. We then talked about when my sister played "Ice Station Santa" for my parents. She cried when my name came across the screen.

My response: "You too?"
