Does this program exist?

I'm looking to organize the media I have on my computer using tags, because the whole file-folder metaphor really isn't doing it for me anymore. Unless you intentionally go off the beaten path, your computer currently treats a file like a physical object. It lives in a "folder" on your computer.

This is stupid. It is an artificial limitation.

I was looking at my shelf of DVDs, sorted (roughly) alphabetically. On the shelf, 'A Few Good Men', 'Akira', 'The American President', and 'The Abyss' are all near each other.

This way of organizing stuff really doesn't do me any good.

I don't think about wanting to watch 'The American President' if I'm considering 'Akira'. Rather, I'd also consider 'Steamboy' (both anime).

If I thought about watching 'The Abyss', I might think about watching 'Terminator 2' (both directed by James Cameron), or maybe 'The Poseidon Adventure' (both under water).

The problem is that DVDs can't be in several places at once, which means I have to pick one sorting method and stick to it.

On my computer, however, things should/can (I HOPE) be different. I have media of various types (divx, mp3, aac, some protected Windows Media) currently sorted by type, then series or artist, then season or album, etc.

This is the exact same problem that I have with my shelf of DVDs. I know I'm not the only person frustrated by this.

I want to assign arbitrary tags to the media files on my computer, and then browse my media via any of those tags. And I don't mind using a media management program for this.

This is because I'd like to access my media via several paths:

- By director
- By producer
- By writer
- By actor/actress
- By genre
- By arbitrary tags like "Musicals", "Muppets", "Fucked Up", etc. ("Meet The Feebles" would show up under all three. "Muppet Christmas Carol" under "Musicals" and "Muppets" only, plus under "Christmas Movies".)

You get the idea. I'm more than happy to enter this data myself.

I've tried Windows Media Player and iTunes; neither worked.

How can I do this?
