McCain picked the woman from Alaska.

I was hoping he wouldn't be smart enough to make that pick.

edit: as folks below are commenting, and I'm reading more, I realize that this actually isn't that bad a choice after all, from an anti-McCain perspective. I was concerned because I'd heard he was going to pick Romney, who would've clearly been a great pick from our point of view! And this is such a surprise that it's getting a lot of hullabaloo and attention and pretty much eclipsing and overshadowing the DNC and Barack's acceptance speech. It's also (not coincidentally, I'm sure!!) overshadowing the fact that today is John McCain's birthday, and he's turning 72 YEARS OLD. Why is such an old dude, with all his various health problems, nominating for second-in-command a person who so clearly doesn't have the experience or vision to be the leader of this country? Though at the same time, I'm worried that attacks on her experience are going to quickly devolve into condescending, just-an-ex-beauty-queen-hockey-mom sexism.
