so i've moved to new hampshire. last day of work on friday was lovely, driving up saturday morning was great (thanks for the ride, Loren!), and now i'm here and i can't quite believe it. sooner or later everything will catch up to everything else, but for now, my entire life has a slightly surreal feel, like the outside of time unreality that comes with being on vacation...except I'm not on vacation. first unofficial day of work tomorrow, first official start day on tuesday.

have been reading and worrying about Hurricane Gustav down in the gulf. Rochelle has family and friends down there who are evacuating. I can't help thinking (and then feeling guilty for thinking) that it will be interesting to see how McCain and Obama respond to any devastation or lack thereof. crossing fingers that the storm isn't as bad as it's starting to seem. the weather.com clip that we just watched included the phrases "rainfall will ultimately be measured in feet" and "best tornado chances" which I guess actually means WORST tornado chances.

went garage sale-ing today and  scored big! we found a papsan chair frame for 10 bucks, and then I realized with chagrin that only 2 months ago I finally got rid of the papasan cushion that i'd had crammed under my bed since my last papsan chair bit the bucket. we priced new cushions at pier 1 (!) only to find that they're 60-80 bucks (!!) so now we're thinking about trying to make a DIY version, which i'm thinking would have about 12:7 odds of being awesome versus laughable. also bought new muffin tins, and a green plaid felted wool baseball cap with ear flaps that should serve me very well this winter.

but for now, it's still summer, and the college students are back with their bad driving and worse fashions...I'm going to miss not just NYC restaurants, but also the fashionable folks walking around to inspire and encourage my own fashions. anyway, the weather is gorgy, as fratman dan might put it. i am SO in favor of 83 degree days and 55 degree nights. perfect summer temperatures! if it's hot again next weekend when Kate visits, hopefully we can find some of the swimming holes in the area.
