Kay in ACB's summer school; Obon

Aug 05, 2013 20:28

despite that my ALT job is on summer break right now, i'm still working in the mornings.  instead of running off to different schools, i'm just going to ACB (my current employer) and doing their summer school program right now.  basically, it's like a summer camp, so there's more fun going on than actual learning.  :P

i thought it'd be nice to have Kay there with me while i worked.  plus, it would get more English in her daily routine.  i've noticed a considerable increase in her Japanese language skills, but a bit of a regression in her English.  since she's been going to the hoikuen Monday-Friday, and only gets to see me for a few hours in the evening, she's mostly speaking Japanese the whole day.  hence the regression in her English.  i've also noticed that she likes to insert Japanese into her English sentences lately, making it even more broken than it already is, and granted i can understand what she means, it kind of irks me.  hm... i wonder if this is what my parents felt like when i was learning Mandarin when i was little... :P

anyway, to boost up her English abilities, i thought having her in the summer school where i can keep an eye on her would help a bit.  granted she's still speaking in Japanese to other kids, she's at least speaking English to the teachers she encounters, along with learning more vocabulary about the themes we're teaching at the summer school (different places around the world).  she's only on her third day, so i haven't seen any changes, but we'll see how much she's soaked in by next Monday when the summer school ends.

next Tuesday starts Obon here in Japan, which means vacation time for me!  depending on where you work, some people get 3-5 days off.  ACB is taking the 13-15th off while my Saturday job is actually taking the whole week off.  so, that means i'll have to work Monday on the 12th and then again on the 16th and 17th.  kind of puts a damper on what could have been a really long week off, but i guess it's for the better.  remember how i was during the Hakata Dontaku week?  i think i was bored out of my mind by the 3rd day.  plus, i wasn't really taking care of myself and ended up sleeping at odd hours in the night... or something like that.  :P  yea, i need structure in my life and working gives me that kind of structure.

the 13th will be the annual beach picnic for my Saturday job.  i plan on taking Kay like i did last year, and i'm really looking forward to it this year, because i'll be meeting a new friend i met through LJ.  she just moved to Fukuoka with her family and once we meet, we'll be IRL friends! :D  just hope that it won't be sweltering hot that day... then again, that's kind of asking too much since it is the summer now... :P  i guess i should be praying to not get sunburned like i did last year.  i made the stupid mistake of not putting any sunblock on, because i thought hiding under a big tent was good enough.  i didn't even think about reflected UV rays that bounce off the sand :(  i still have the tan line (i'm one of those people who burn, peel and then get tan) on my left arm from that incident... it makes for an ugly farmer's tan, and i ABHOR farmer's tans!! DX

so yea, i'll be looking forward to meeting new friends and having fun with my co-workers, but not so much the heat and sun that comes with being on the beach.  :P
