Awkward would have been a definite understatement if one were to describe their dinner that night. Nao who insisted on taking out some burgers from a fast food joint, much to Yuri’s dismay, had somehow convinced everyone it was the baby who craved it, not her. To top that off, Nao being Nao had also made sure Yuri did not go with her to pick up the food. She explained if he came along with her then she definitely wouldn’t have gotten all the wonderful unhealthy things she wanted. Ryo being a suspected murderer was clearly not an option. It was best he did not go out in public unless necessary. Miki had decided he wanted to stay back and talk some things out with Yuri about work. Thus leaving Mirai to accompany Nao to fetch them all dinner, leaving all 3 men alone in Mirai’s apartment.

Ryosuke watched the girls walk along the street until the two disappeared out of his sight. Sighing, he turned back around and walked back to where the other two sat. Sitting himself down, he doubted that it was only him that felt the heavy atmosphere around them. To his right was Yuri grumbling over the dinner his wife went out to buy that he referred to as “death food” while he played with the empty cup of coffee in his hands, mumbling complaints about how unhealthy it was for a pregnant woman. To his left was a silent Miki in deep thought, sitting in what he assumed could not be a comfortable position. Although if Miki was uncomfortable he sure didn’t show it.

Normally in books or movies this scene would be considered the beginning, the first chapter per say, to a beautiful friendship that would blossom between these three men. Ryosuke couldn’t disagree more, this was by far one of the most uncomfortable silences he has had to sit through. God did he hope Mirai would be back soon.

With the cold winters air that blew around them and Nao’s high pitched voice that never seemed to pause for a breathe, Mirai felt her ears going numb. She must’ve zoned out half way through, because before she knew it Nao had one of her small hands wrapped around her forearm with a questioning face. “I’m sorry. I must have blanked out. Did you ask me something?” Staring up at Mirai, Nao bit her lip as she eyed her from head to toe. Now, Nao was certainly weird and out of the ordinary, but this look was different. It had concern written all over it.

“Mirai. . .I love you. You know that right?” Normally Mirai would have laughed at her as she jokingly nudged an elbow into the younger girl’s side. This time was different. She felt her throat tighten, keeping words from spilling out. Of course she knew Nao loved her. They were best friends. Each others shoulder to cry on when things got tough, they would always be the other’s rock, no questions asked. So why did she feel like this went much deeper than their routine of teasing one another, when they’d declare their undying love as they laughed till their sides hurt. “Where is this going Nao?”

Truthfully Nao had been preparing herself for this conversation a while now. Was this the appropriate time or place to bring this up? Would she ruin their friendship? Nao’s head buzzed with all these questions as Mirai stared her down, waiting for an answer that Nao wasn’t quite sure she could properly convey.

Clasping her hands together right above her perfectly round belly, she bit her lip in attempt to muster up some courage. She couldn’t help but wish for a nice burning glass of vodka. Liquid courage was always a boost, and it also made her a bit tipsy as it untied all the knots her tongue was in. Unfortunately she was pregnant and alcohol was an absolute no no. Yuri would definitely blow if she had even the tiniest of sips, that, and there was no bar close enough for her to just gulp some down within the next 10 seconds. It was now or never, right? Not like there was much of a choice. Mirai was clearly getting impatient with her.

“I mean. . . I mean no one would blame you if you ditched Ryo now. If you can’t stick with him all through out.” Nao was well aware from the moment these ideas crossed her mind, that she’d be approaching a very, very sensitive topic. The look reflecting in Mirai’s large chocolate pools of eyes was clear enough to confirm Nao’s thoughts. She had indeed, walked them both into a place she knew so well that Mirai was circling around. The pain, the feeling of betrayal that Mirai knew she was selfish enough to feel, had already made its way to settle in her stomach; Making her slowly loose her appetite that was still there just moments before. It was unfair of her to feel betrayed by Nao. Nao who was only worried for her, worried for not only her safety but more appropriately, worried that she would get hurt, wether it be physical or emotional.

Mirai’s silence had appeared understandable, even somewhat expected at first. What with her best friend questioning her and bringing up a topic she was oh so careful to avoid. However, as the silence drew on it began to concern Nao. Was this normal? Mirai and her were standing at the side of a street in silence for approximately 15 minutes at least. 15 minutes must be a little long...right? No. This would not do. Nao decided it was time to snap Mirai out of whatever she was too deeply in thought about.

“Mirai?” Cautiously extending a hand to grasp one of Mirai’s gloved ones, she continued. “Mirai, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have-” “No.” Mirai’s voice cut her off sharp and cold. As if a knife sliced her tongue off, Nao was incapable of responding to that, let alone form words. Taking her free hand that Nao did not grab hold of, Mirai gently brought it up to slide Nao’s hand off. Mirai felt a sharp jab at her heart as she saw the tears that began to form at the rims of Nao’s large round eyes. Shaking her head Mirai tried to offer up a comforting smile.

If she was fully honest with herself, Mirai was scared. Although she knew that being frightened by this situation was only normal. She had always pushed aside these thoughts. Mirai ignored reason and logic, which was not like her at all. It was childish and stupid, but if she avoided questioning herself on what should really be done, she wouldn’t have to face the cruel reality that the circumstances were more than just not in their favor. If anything, they were against her. Nao was only being the good friend that wanted her to be sure of herself, because once Mirai crossed a certain point there would be no return.

The countless disastrous ways that a situation such as this could go down, was more than unsettling. For gods sake she was not only hiding, but housing a suspected mass murderer. Just to what extent would she be willing to go for Ryo? At what costs would Mirai pay? Clearly her job was one. She let him in her home, into her life, into her heart. Oh, she thought. That was it. That was her answer. How odd that a situation as complex and delicate could be answered with a simple answer. Ryosuke was already implanted firmly into her heart.

Despite the uncalled for conversation, and the lack of privacy this buzzing street had provided for her, Mirai finally understood and accepted what she was doing. Crossing a line that she could never return to was not a concern any longer, she already crossed it without realizing it. Mirai had let Ryosuke into her heart. She was in love with the childlike man filled with charm and warmth that she’s never felt before, and she would go through great lengths to protect him and whatever future that may lay ahead for them.

“Mirai?” Nao’s voice whispered. As she stared at her best friends face Mirai allowed a small delicate smile to bloom on her face. After so many years Nao no longer needed Mirai to convey her thoughts in words, Nao knew perfectly well what that smile meant. Mirai has made a choice to stick by Ryo, just as Nao and Yuri will stand by them no matter what. Smiling back Nao linked one of her arms to Mirai’s, silently reminding her friend they were meant to buy dinner. Hopefully by the time the two return to the apartment Nao’s small ungloved hands wouldn’t be turning blue by frostbite.

The ringing of a small bell echoed through the door and into the apartment. Miki couldn’t help but silently scold Mirai in his head as he heard the damned thing from her keys. How he used to constantly tell her to remove the wretched thing. To most a small bell would have been considered harmless, a small trinket that produced a lovely jingle when moved. However to Miki the small piece of metal could mean danger, as small as it was, it could produce a surprisingly loud noise. If something were to ever happen, and Mirai had to hide, the bell would give her off as quickly as a trigger could be pulled. Sure he was over thinking things, being over protective and possibly playing jump rope with the line that split cautiousness and paranoia, but he’s seen many things and being safe was never a bad option.

“MIRAI BOUGHT ME A BANANA MUFFIN!” Nao informed everyone as she bounced into the apartment, Mirai close on her heel.
“THAT WAS MEANT TO BE A SECRET! LOOK NOW YOUR HUSBAND WILL HAVE MY HEAD!” Yuri’s face showing the exact emotion Mirai was talking about, his eyes narrowed down at her but just as he parted his lips to scold her Ryo walked in grabbing the bags in Mirai’s hand. Pouting he looked at her “I’m hungry.” He whined, dragging both Mirai and Yuri to the table.

“Can I eat my banana muffin first?” “NO!” Hollered Yuri. “WHY NOT?!”

“EAT YOUR DINNER NAO OR YOURE NOT EATING THAT MUFFIN, EVER!” Nao stared at her husband with horrified eyes, as if having such a treat taken away from her could end her life. “After dinner Nao, after dinner.” Mirai reassured her best friend as she passed by her to fetch the plates in the cupboards.

Truthfully it was nice to watch Nao and Yuri bicker back and forth, it made everything in their life appear normal when it was so far from being so.

“I think so too” Ryo’s husky voice said into her ear as he wrapped his arms her from behind. “How in the world...?” “You said it out loud...again.” Damn the effect he had on her. Sure that thought was clean and untainted, but what would she do if one of those happened to slip?! “Oh I would love to hear one of those~”

“Damn it! Ryo stop listening to my thoughts!”

“You keep saying them out loud I can’t help it.”

“Ohhhhhhhh love birds~” Cooed Yuri as he peered into the kitchen. Laughing at their friends silly joke Mirai and Ryo gathered the china wear from the cupboards and made their way back to the table. “BURGERS!!!!” “Nao you can’t have 5 burgers.” “Why not?!” “It’s not healthy.” Pouting Nao turned to everyone else in the room declaring how strict and boring her husband could be, all the while hugging his arm. They really were a couple that loved to argue. That baby would living in Nao’s womb all warm and protected will be loved more than any other baby Mirai could think of.

Nao’s small nose scrunched up as she watched Miki dissect his burger with great precision as he pulled the pickles out one by one.

“What are you doing?” Nao asked. “Taking out my pickles.” “I know but WHY” “I don’t really like pickles all to much.” Pursing her lips she stared at Mirai as if to ask her what was up with him, Nao had seen him eat burgers countless time and this was definitely a first. Staring back at Nao questioningly Mirai let her eyes travel to Miki and his burger, oh...oh, she forgot to ask for no pickles. “Oh god sorry Miki. I forgot to ask for no pickles in your burgers, there was just so much to order it slipped my mind.” Smiling back at Mirai he shook her head reassuring her he didn’t mind at all, then dunking all the pickles into Nao’s plate. “Uhm...why?” “You’re pregnant.” “So...?” “I hear pregnant woman like pickles.” Chuckling Mirai shook her head at Miki’s words, sure it was Miki, he was likely to do that. “Take it Nao. Thats his way of being considerate...even if he’s also getting rid of food he doesn’t want.” Nodding her head in approval Nao popped a pickle into her mouth. “Usually I hate this stuff, but the baby seems to want it.” “That or you’re turning into a pig.” “CHINEN YURI WHAT DID YOU SAY TO ME?! I AM YOUR WIFE! WHOSE FAULT DO YOU THINK IT IS THAT I AM PREGNANT AND FAT RIGHT NOW!”

“Honey...I’m sorry...” Pointing at her own stomach then an accusing finger to Yuri. Nao bit back. “Sorry?! I TOLD YOU TO USE PROTECTION THAT NIGHT, BUT NOOOOO SOMEONE THOUGHT IT WAS OKAY! Who do you think that someone was?!” Hanging his head down Yuri whispered a soft “Me.” “Exactly. YOU got ME PREGNANT. Now we all know I love this kid and theres not a thing that can make me regret it BUT DO NOT CALL ME A PIG MISTER OR ELSE!” Sure any normal person wouldn’t have quite understood why a simple “or else” could cause Yuri to have such a horrified look on his face, but this crazy married couple’s friends would know. How could they not? Nao and Yuri were like rabbits. So of course whatever Nao needed to get out of Yuri she got by merely threatening to deprive him for a week or longer. It was always an effective method for Nao, hasn’t failed her once. Mirai found Yuri to be totally stupid, if he sat down to think about it, he would have properly figured out in no time that depriving him would also mean depriving herself; Which Nao could not do. They dated and got married for a reason. They were by all means compatible.

“HEY why are there more pickles on my plate!” Nao shot an accusatory glance at Miki but he was quick to shake his head. Mirai loved pickles so she was not an option. Peering at her husband with slanted eyes he held his hands up repeatedly saying it wasn’t him. However if it was none of them there was only one person left...turning her head Nao saw a half shy grin on Ryo’s face as he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. “I don’t like pickles...never have.” He stated as he slowly placed another one onto her plate.

Throwing her hands up in the air Nao pointed her finger at Miki and Ryo. “Seriously?! So is it a trend now for handsome men to dislike pickles?” “I’m handsome too but I like pickles.” Staring straight at her husband Nao told him “No. Honey you eat pickles. You are not invited into the handsome men club."

Hello my lovely readers! I am so sorry for my long absences. I realize I post things then disappear for a while each time! My apologies! I have been busy with school work and real life things, can you all believe I first became a fanfic writer when I was 12/13, how horribly embarrassing those pieces of work were at that time! Well I'm sure you're wondering why I bring this up, well I am 17 now. 17! And hopefully my writing skills have improved a lot since I first began. I have everyone that commented and left reviews to thank for that. Each and everyone of my readers is the reason why this story even exists. I am amazed by how I actually came up with such a plot! No, I am mot self praising. Actually, I am praising you all. Due to your comments, your encouraging words, telling me your opinions on the chapter and letting me know you wait for an update, is exactly what has built me into the writer I am today. I don't think I am the best, and I am aware I will always have room for improvement. This story though, this plot, was born out of my desire to live up to my readers expectations and leave them with a good story to read. This story is thanks to all of my readers including the silent ones, even if i don't know you and you don't make yourselves visible, I am so thankful! Though I can not promise any frequent updates I promise you all I will always update eventually on this story. I plan on finishing this fanfic at least. So I ask that you all please bear with me and my infrequent updates. Oh and I know I've been loosing readers due to my lack of updates but I am still thankful to everyone none the less! Please comment and let me know how this chapter was! Comments give me motivation to update! Love you all!
