The tension in the room was horrible. Everyone was absolutely silent. Miki was seated in his own chair. Mirai, Nao and Yuri were sitting on the long couch together with Ryosuke leaning on the end. “Mirai, this is a crime.” The young handsome man sitting across from her spoke, breaking the unbearable silence. She hung her head low in response, she knew, boy did she know. How could she handcuff him though? How could she turn him in when all odds were against him? That was something she could not do.
“You have no right to talk” Ryo’s low and steady voice interrupted. Miki in response raised an eyebrow.
“You do realize that you’re a suspect right?”
“That doesn’t matter right now!” Ryo said exasperated. Mirai watched him with wide eyes. He’s gone nuts! He totally lost it!
“I did not. I’m perfectly sane Mirai.” “Wha-Oh again....” Nao nodded as to confirm her friends thoughts. Yuri could only shake his head at this, it was all still so new to him...Mirai....with a guy....in a relationship....a romantic relationship. They all seemed to forget about one very important thing though, Miki.
“Mirai...did you just?” Miki evidently shocked at the scene that just unveiled before him.
“I have that affect on her” Ryo smugly stated. Nao and Yuri couldn’t blame Miki for being so surprised though. After all, it was unusual, rather unexpected of Mirai really.
While the man was still in shock, Ryo decided it was his time to do what he wanted, to just straight out say the things he wanted to say. “I don’t like you. I don’t like you at all.” Of course those words hadn’t shaken Miki in the least, he was a detective after all. He was used to much more vulgar and menacing words being thrown at him.
“I don’t really expect you to. I am in charge of catching you and throwing you behind bars.” “Who cares about that! I’m not that petty! I have better reasons to dislike you!” Ryo whined at the detective, annoyed that he was looked at as such a person.
Those words however, had the detective curious at what it was that made Ryo so mad.
“And what might those reasons be?” His voice was filled with curiosity, but he was composed nonetheless. “YOUVE SLEPT WITH HER!” Ryo whined as he pointed a finger at Mirai. Nao and Yuri broke out in laughter the second the words slipped out of Ryo’s lips. That, that was what he was so agitated about? He really should get his priorities straight. Sitting across from him, just four feet away, sat a detective that wouldn’t hesitate to hand him into the police and let him be charged with murder. No. That didn’t bother him at all. There was something wrong with him, no doubt about it.
“Excuse me, what?” Poor Miki was just absolutely confused. The man before him couldn’t possibly be referring to what he was thinking, could he? Heck he just met him a mere 10 minutes ago!
Mirai sat there awkwardly in the middle of the conversation. She didn’t turn red, she didn’t blow up. She was pale. Just like porcelain, she was pale and still, possibly even cold to the touch. Ryo, her Ryo, just decided the matters of her past sexual activity was by far more important than him being suspected for mass murder. She was in a total daze. Unsure if that was a positive thing or not. “Oh.My.God. You just broke Mirai!” “Yuri be quiet” Nao said as she smacked her husband’s arm.
“You know what I mean!”
“No I don’t...” An obviously confused Miki replied.
“You SLEPT with her! You went on all those adventures with her before I got to! You got to do those things!” It was quite clear the man was just ranting by now. Mirai, snapping out of her comatose state, went straight for smacking the man beside her. “THAT HURT MIRAI!” “I DON’T CARE!” “I CARE”
“IT WAS BEFORE I MET YOU!” This man....how in the world....there weren’t words to describe what she was feeling, but if she had to choose then bewildered would definitely be one of them. Could anyone blame her? The man just went out right and talked about her....well past happening with the exact man she did it with! For Christ sake the guy should be happy she didn’t throw him straight out her apartment through her window! To just throw him down the 35 stories!
“You scare me sometimes you know that?” Ryo’s eyebrows furrowed as he commented on her thoughts. “This isn’t the worse I can think off Mr.” Honestly, if there weren’t other people in the room he would have shown her that he could probably do much, much worse than her.
“So is anyone going to explain any of this to me, or should I cut things short and just handcuff him?” As Miki’s words brought everyones attention back. “Its complicated Miki, it really is, but I promise you, he wont hurt me. He hasn’t hurt anyone!” Mirai pleaded to her fellow detective. Sighing, Miki ran a hand through his hair, exasperated at the whole idea of Mirai hiding and protecting a suspect of mass murder. Leaning forward, practically at the edge of his seat, Miki looked Mirai right in the eyes then spoke in the calmest manner he could muster. “Mirai, if you’re so sure, then hand him in. If you are so sure that he innocent hand him in and if he really is then he will be free.” “You know I can’t do that Miki.” “Why Mirai? Why?” “Because the evidence will point straight at him, it will, and before you even mention it all because it points at him doesn’t mean he is the criminal!”
Leaning back into his chair Miki brought a hand to his face, rubbing his eyes as though he were trying to wake himself up from a bad dream. To bad Ryo thought, this wasn’t a dream, if this seemed like a bad dream in Miki’s eyes, then Ryo’s world would seem like a horror story in comparison. “Mirai, if he is the criminal, do you know how much trouble you will be in?” Looking down at the floorboards Miki shut his eyes trying to reason with Mirai was like trying to squeeze water out of a rock. “You won’t only loose your job, you will be looked at as a criminal too Mirai.” “I know Miki. He isn’t though.”
Ryo watched as Miki’s eyes traveled from Mirai to Nao and Yuri, as if asking for some help. Ryo didn’t know wether they refused to help, or Miki just gave up on asking for help, but before he knew it the male detective was now on his feet standing straight up, chin up, and chest puffed up. “Mirai, I understand if you can’t bring yourself to handcuff him and hand him in yourself, but then I will do it.” However Miki’s words felt as though they were more directed towards Ryo than Mirai.
Ryo couldn’t help but feel annoyance for the detective. Sure he was doing his job, but the way he looked at Mirai was just making his insides boil. A normal friend does not look at their friend that way. “You plan on handcuffing me because I’m a suspect, or because Mirai is into me now and not you?” “Excuse me?” Miki asked as he raised an accusing eyebrow at the shorter male. “Well after all you did do her.” The exact second the words passed his lips Ryo felt his mouth go dry. This was something he couldn’t take back. Before he knew it something flashed before his eyes and the echoes of a slap rang in the air.
"Nao that HURT!" Hand on his nose with eyes glaring straight at the young girl he stood back up. She was small but her punches had a kick that brought him down to the floor in pain. "Apologize. NOW." Hands on her swollen hips she stared up at him as if daring him to defy her.
So he did defy her, "Am I wrong? Did he NOT do her?" Now Ryo was many things, for one he was a suspect for mass murders, however he wasn't the type to hurt a fly. Regardless his words hurt. They felt like a stab as each word echoed in Mirai's ears. With teary eyes she stood up, face to face with Ryo. How could he turn something that was special to her into something...something dirty with just one sentence? She didn't love Miki that way right now, but that didn't mean those nights from the past lost their special meaning to her. She somehow managed to get her voice out, but suppressed the sobs from escaping her throat as she spoke. "No you aren't wrong." She took a short pause to take a breathe and continued "But does sleeping with someone mean you instantly gain trust? Does it?. . . You haven't slept with me and here I am, hiding you from the world that is out to get you." Nao stood beside her friend, holding her hand tightly as she knew Mirai was trying her best to stay composed. With her free hand Mirai brought it up to her face, wiping her eyes for a split second. In that instant he knew, he knew he hurt her. He opened his mouth to talk but her eyes that gave him a look of betrayal caught him off guard. Everything he was going to say was swallowed back down.
Releasing her hand from Nao, Mirai swiftly walked towards her kitchen, hoping for a momentary escape. Instantly swerving around, Ryo was more than ready to run after her, but Yuri's hand grabbed hold of the larger man's shoulder. At that moment a blur passed by his eyes, Miki went to her. That bastard ran after her and he couldn't because there was a midget holding him back.
"Sit, they won't do anything Ryo." Nao sat up just to push her obviously emotionally compromised friend to sit beside her and her husband. He was boiling mad, he knew his words were harsh but it was never his intention to hurt her. "He slept with her and acts like as long as its Mirai, he would believe her if she said the moon was square!" Sighing Nao shook her head, "You, right now, what you're feeling, that's what we call jealousy my dear friend."
Jealousy was something he never had to deal with. He was never really, well, in love. It sounds silly but Mirai lit something in him the moment he saw her at that bar. It all was new to him.
"Mirai? You plan on leaving an indent of your face on that fridge?" Miki asked as he watched Mirai with her face plastered to the fridge door. Slowly walking towards her, he pulled her around. Her bangs covered her eyes but failed to hide the tear tracks on her cheeks, still wet and still rolling down. Grabbing her face he brought it up. Wiping away her tears he watched all the emotions flash through her eyes. Pain, Betrayal, and yet love. Love that wasn't for him. He brought his hand up to pat her head. "Do you remember those cold winter nights where we kept each other company? We would play kid games and watch stupid shows to pass time." The feeling of her head bobbing up and down under his palm let him know she was listening. "Mirai, I'll always be on your side, but I have to think about your safety. Nao has Yuri. Who else can I trust to take care of you aside from me?" But a loud crash interrupted him.
"Ryo!" "Ryosuke!" Was followed right after the crash. Stomping could be heard coming from the living room, and it was headed their way. A restless looking Ryo stood at the opening of the kitchen with the married couple rushing behind him. By then Miki and Mirai were only standing beside each other, no physical contact what so ever. Which was mostly likely a good thing. Well, at least for Mirai it was.
Miki quickly pushed Mirai behind him as he stared at the man gasping for air. Ryo on the other hand took no time to look at the detective; his eyes were locked on Mirai. Miki slightly took a step back, bringing Mirai with him, still in his protective stance. There was no guarantee that Ryo wouldn't hurt them. He was mad and statistically speaking, more than likely a murderer. A mass murderer.
Mirai watched Ryo from behind Miki's protective stance. His face showed sorrow, regret and most of all love. Biting her bottom lip she contemplated all the possibilities on what to do. However no matter how many things she could come up with, she knew Ryo was a total jealous protective freak. Thats really all it came down to.
Stepping out from behind Miki, she took a step forward. Miki grasped her wrist as soon as she walked out from behind his protective shield, as if to tell her not to go, that Ryo could be dangerous. She shook him off gently and continued walking step by step. Stopping once she came a foot close to him, taking a second look. Making sure the emotions she first saw were right, and they were.
To Miki the deep breathing, wide shouldered, built man standing before Mirai could indeed come off as a threat. But to her, he was no more than a scared child needing to be held. To be reassured. Reaching a hand out she caressed his right cheek, as his eyes met hers she didn't need any apology. That look was enough. That look of I'm sorry and I love you was better than any words he could have spoken. So she gave a light smile in return to him. "I love you too." They hugged each other, feeling as though they were puzzle pieces. They fit perfectly.
"So how are we going to catch the murderer?" Interrupting the wonderful scene that unfolded just moments ago, Miki thought it was time to get to business. "Does that mean...?" "Yes Mirai, I believe you all. So what are we going to do?"
Setting the last cup of coffee down on the table, little Nao waddled over to her husband's side to sit. Now everyone was properly seated. "Do we have any clue on who the real murderer is?" Miki asked as he picked up his cup of coffee. Two sugar cubes and a ton of cream, just the way he liked it. Silence was his answer, sighing he crossed his legs and leaned forward. "Ryo, can you think of anyone who may hold a grudge against you?" Again, silence was his only reply. Lightly laying her hand on Ryo's shoulder Mirai repeated the same question. However instead of just silence Ryo turned to her and gave her a look. "Ryo, I swear if you know something, tell me."
Poking her husband, Nao whispered in his ear, "First he makes her say her thoughts out loud and now she can read his thoughts just by facial expressions...."
"Ryo!" Mirai’s voice was practically begging. "She's going to harass you until she gets a proper answer." Miki told Ryo, sharing some knowledge he gained from past experience. "Theres to many." Ryo said. Scrunching her delicate eyebrows together Mirai stared at him confused. "What?" "I mean, there are more than enough people who would like to rid the world of me, or at least rid their world of me."
Raising a delicate eyebrow Miki dared to ask, "Why would there be so many who hold a grudge?" Although it had passed her mind before Mirai never really thought about it. Why would someone be trying to get rid of Ryo? If it were a grudge normally they would physically harm the person right? Moreover she really didn't know much about his background either.
"Because they want something from me." All the attention was on Ryo now, he wasn't that thrilled about having to spill some details, but he had to meet them half way to make things work.
Leaning back into his chair Miki asked as if on Que. "Want what?" "Its not any particular item." "Oh?"
Mirai watched as the two continued to exchange words, and the detective in her came alive. If it weren't an item then maybe a reaction? "A show!" Thats it! They wanted a show! "Am I right?" She asked Ryo.
"Yeah you're right." Patting her head he smiled at her, he really was so in love with her. Everyone else in the room could tell and there was no questioning it.
"Why would they want a show? To see you suffer? For what reason?" Miki asked. Pregnant little Nao decided she wanted in on all the detective talk, so she got in. "Because Ryo can't be hurt physically, in the sense that there will be marks to show it there won't be scars inside. Hurting people hurts him. Ryo is a total sweetie he cares for others more than himself."
Nodding, Miki placed his chin in his now cupped left hand. With such limited information he could make out one thing for sure, this guy didn't want to outright have Ryo gone. No, he wanted to watch as Ryo suffered. "But why would someone hate you to such a point?" Miki asked. Immediately Nao answered, "He must be psychotic! You know not right in the head, dropped as a baby to many times type of thing?" As understandable, and reasonable Nao's reasoning was Yuri couldn't help but consider one thing. "But, if he's doing all this to have Ryo suffer...then he should at least realize that by doing all this, there isn't a 100% guarantee he won't get caught." His wife slightly cocked her head to one side, as if to ask why. "Because if he realizes all that, he should also know that it harms him as well, no? If thats the case then he's already prepared for that. Meaning he doesn't care what happens to him. He just wants Ryo to suffer at all costs." of course Yuri was a fine detective but he was the lazy type. Usually his motto was, "My brain can only activate when there are cases that can't be solved"
