A Little Thought on Characters in RTD's Who

Feb 03, 2011 14:45

I was looking through some screencaps last night and, as I flipped through the end of The Sontaran Stratagem, I looked at the picture of Wilf locked in the car and thought 'It was inevitable, wasn't it?' RTD might not have decided to put Wilf in the box (in EoT) until the very end but Wilf couldn't have been anywhere but in the box. It's in his very nature.

And that's one thing I love about RTD's writing. His characters have inner lives and motivations of their own: ones we can see and that fit their actions. Even for characters we only see for a few minutes I get a sense of them in the world with a past and a future (assuming they survive *g*), with wants and needs. There may be large plot holes in his stories but I always feel as though I understand the people -- who they are, what they doing, and why they are doing it. And when they show up again I can say, 'Well, of course they would do that! All the pieces are there in the last time we saw them.'
