Argh, NO

So this guy was wondering why there's no Bioshock movie yet and I want to reach through the screen and shout at him. No, no, no! Not every popular video game needs to be a movie! Yes, it was a very lovely game with a pretty nice story, but while video games and movies do use some of the same devices to convey information, they don't (DO NOT) translate perfectly into each other! It just don't fly!

In fact, what made Bioshock's narrative so effective for me was not the main plot but the audio diaries you picked up around you; they greatly added to the atmosphere of the game, one's understanding of the people and city, and because they were optional it was more rewarding to go out of one's way to find and listen to them. All of that would be lost if a filmmaker just infodumped the backstory on the audience--and that's what it would be, because there's no way to make scenes optional in a film. You either lose an understanding, or you lose the mystique. Besides that, it was cathartic and scary to be the one alone in a crumbling city, ambushed and relying on your wit (see: crazy-ass powers and sweet weaponry) to get you through things. It's less fun to watch someone else do things that you already did. :<

Also: this kid makes me feel worse about myself for struggling through Rock Band's hammer-ons. Sure kid, maybe you've got the free time to practice and totally own at Guitar Hero, but I've got obligations and financial responsibility. Yeah. Bet you're jealous now!
