Ollantaytambo was one of the most important Inca fortified sites in the Urubamba valley. Its fortress was the only one to fight off a Spanish attack. As you wil see it's much lusher than Cusco (600m lower down) though not as jungly as Macchu Picchu. Handily it's now the place where one catches the train to Macchu Picchu ( Read more... )

The lemur is home with the cameras and so I have something like 900 stills and 90 video clips to sort through. Here, for a start, are two short video clips. One is of the Presidential Guard in Lima and the other of Cusco's cutest kitten.

There does not appear to be a Twitter group for Peruvian policewomen. This is fairly surprising as they appear to have been designed by a fairly serious fetishist. They wear well tailored uniforms, knee boots with two inch heels and shiny white leather gear to hold their guns and night sticks. The most obvious drink thing about Peru is that one can't drink the tap water. Fortunately bottled water is very cheap and available. It does piss me off though that I couldn't clean my teeth without making money for the Coca-Cola corporation ( Read more... )

In Cusco the temperature varied from just above freezing to mid twenties with virtually no humidity. Right now Toronto is 24C (forecast to hit 32C later in the day) and 97% humidity. I've just been out running. Two weeks at 3300m above sea level seems to have done some good as I am not actually dead. I am, however, at some risk of drowning in ( Read more... )

I got back home last night after a thirty hour haul from Cusco via Lima and Mexico City. The cats are just fine. I now have a closer acquaintance with both Lima and mexico City airports than I really need. Why does stuff cost five times as much inside the airport as outside?
