Canada Day

I went for a longish exploratory bike ride this morning. I started out on well known ground up the Don Valley to Edwards gardens before exploring a series of trails, mostly in the Don Valley, with a few street connections, from Lawrence and Leslie up to somewhere north of Finch and west of Leslie. From there I cut through fairly quiet streets to Hilda just south of Finch where there is a new trail through a Hydro easement. I took this west to the lake at Sheppard west of Bathurst then headed south to Wilson. A short unpleasant deek on Wilson and Bathurst got me back south of the 401 and able to pick up a back street route to the Belt Line trail. The Belt Line, Mt. Pleasant cemetery and the route south through Rosedale to Sherbourne got me home. It was a mostly pleasant 56km ride that took me about 3.5 hours. Not fast but not too bad for a fairly hilly unfamiliar route on a hot day.

I spent a fair chunk of the ride listening to Peter Maxwell Davies' The Lighthouse. What an odd work it is! The music isn't particularly shocking for late 20th century opera but the libretto is really quite bizarre. I should really like to see it on stage.
