Best Russian opera composer? This is a bit like the French problem except this time nobody has much more than a couple of works that are performed frequently. Stravinsky has a couple. Shostakovich has a couple. Tchaikovsky has maybe three that are given reasonably often. I can't think of anyone else who has more than one. In terms of numbers of productions and performances though Tchaikovsky is well ahead of the pack. Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades are the most performed operas by a Russian composer and the former might just be the best too. Pyotr Ilyich gets the nod.
