Well, damn.
I always have the max taken out of my paycheck because I never want to owe the Feds or state *anything*.
Well, damn.
I saw taxes being taken out and I *assumed* they were the correct amount.
Hah.
Ancient chinese proverb (or maybe one too many episodes of Kung Fu when I was younger)... 'may you live in interesting times'.
These be very interesting times. :<
Turns out the company I worked for last year DID NOT take out the max like I had written down on the form.
I am now the proud owner of debt to IRS of some $800+ and to the state of another $600+... I'm thinking of pulling it out of my ~~er~~hat~~~yeah, that's it...hat. ^_^
I will need to be making payment arrangements which, nice people the IRS, will cost an extra $100+ to do.
Bad me... I really should have double-checked what the employer was doing, but trusted their staff to hit the right keys when inputting data.
What makes it worse, is I couldn't file to the last minute because said employer and I were in dispute over my final paycheck.
They insisted they overpaid me, I had to prove they actually underpaid me.
When they sent me the updated W-2 which I just freaking got (hence the delay in filing taxes which I normally do online in January!!!)come to find out I can't use the New updated W-2 because according to Federal law or some such... I 'had the use of the funds during the term for which they were taxed'.
When I *asked* the accountant at the employer's firm, I was *told* I would have to use the updated info.
Even worse, is every freaking year since I started working, I've *always* received a tax refund of $500 or more. I was *counting* on these funds to pay off a little credit card debt... little did I know that I was *deeper* in debt.
*cries*
