My favorite story this year: Cradlesong, hands down. I am also very fond of my currently unposted j2_everafter, but Cradlesong is the better story, and the thing I’m most proud of.
My least favorite story this year: While You Were Sleeping, it’s not a fandom I was ever really in or a pairing I ship, and I didn’t really like the person I was writing for, but she bullied me, so I kind of crapped out the first thing that fit her prompt that I could. Bad Cherie is bad!
Most successful story: It’s kind of a tossup with Slow Show and But We'll Always Have Our Vending Machines, but I think Vending Machines wins because it happened a lot faster.
Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Cradlesong, which didn’t come as a surprise, I knew there was no market. I wrote it for myself, and I’m so happy I did, and the people who did read it seem to have really loved it, which is more than enough. I also got one of the sweetest recs I’ve ever seen for it. But I do kind of wish more people read it.
Most fun story: Nobility’s True Badge, I didn’t think I wanted to write it, but I think it was the best part of my summer-easy, rewarding, and I got to spend hours working through it with chat all through the night as we did endless writing battles. Thinking about this story makes my heart warm, even though I’m not a huge fan of the story itself.
Story with single sexiest moment: Hmm…that’s hard because I find it kind of hard to get turned on by my own porn. All of Cradlesong, because the whole thing is 50% porn, and I fucking love it. But if you want a moment, I actually think the femmeslash in No I in Foursome is pretty steamy.
Biggest story fail: Cue the Sun for this year’s j2_everafter, which was a really awesome story in my head at the time, but which I put off until the night before it was due, and it’s so rushed and just awful, not to mention that I’ve grown a lot as a writer over the year, so I think it would have been bad in retrospect, even if I’d given it the time it deserved.
Hardest story to make: Perpetual Motion took so much plotting and replotting and pulling teeth and hard work. I don’t know if I pulled it off ultimately, but I do know I worked my ass off on that story and am moderately proud.
The things I've learned this year:
- Never, ever, no matter how good of an idea it seems at the time, run an exchange. Just don’t do it. Ever.
- Posting bigbangs is scary.
- Don’t let other people decide how you feel about your own story.
- I don’t know. I feel like I’ve gotten astronomically better this year. Just the change in how bad my writing was at the start of the year to how slightly less bad my writing was by the summer was a huge jump. I still have serious pacing issues and a lot to learn, but I feel like I’m getting decent and am actually pretty good at character stuff.
- I think I might have an incest kink, you guys. :/ And JFC, you think maybe I like threesomes a little too much?
Wishes and to do list for 2010:
My goal for 2010 was to write 200,000. I wrote 350,000. I feel like setting a reach goal at this point is only setting myself up for disaster. I guess try to get to 375,000? Or maybe write less but actually write well :P
To Do List? Right now, it looks like this:
1. Finish wutendeskind's & morganoconner’s charity fic.
2. Polish j2_everafter.
3. Write last Wincest story for sparklybee for fictictactoe/help_haiti IF SHE EVER WRITES HERS.
4. spnthreesome pinch hits (at least 1, no more than 6).
5. My take on how Sam gets his soul back/what happens after (preferably before show returns from hiatus and makes me even more not canon).
6. Birthday present for ordinaryink, all to do with this madness.
7. At least 2 more timestamps to Cradlesong, because I don’t have a middle name, but, if I did, I bet it would be Self-Indulgent.
