Donghae looks up when he hears a throat being cleared. And then he wishes he hadn’t because he has come face to face with the very man he had been avoiding studiously for the past few days. He can’t see his facial expression too well in the dark room, but knows by the sudden awkwardness in the air that this is not going to be a pleasant conversation.
You and me
We used to be together
Everyday together always
I really feel That I'm losing my best friend
He does not know when all the madness had started, but one day he woke up and everything and everyone looked different. Or maybe not everything and everyone, but Hyukjae certainly did and he meant more to Donghae than anything or anyone else did anyway. Everything Hyukjae did, everything Hyukjae said, every smile Hyukjae smiled, came across to him in different light. He should have known then that he was headed for trouble.
I can't believe
This could be the end
It looks as though you're letting go
And if it's real
Well I don't want to know He and Eunhyuk had always been close, and sometime over the years, the line between friendship and love had been blurred. Or at least for Donghae anyway. It was easy to overstep the boundary because it was accepted by everyone as what they wanted to see; a display of fan service between two friends. It had started out innocent enough; they wound up sitting together at meals, sitting next to each other in cars, and being as close to each other as possible on reality shows. Eventually, it grew until they were often seen sleeping in the same bed, sharing the bathroom, sharing their clothes. It kept growing and growing until it reached the present state; where Donghae didn’t know where Eunhyuk ended and Donghae began.
They started to spend all their time together whenever they could, calling each other their “girlfriend” on public television, choosing each other for every love-related question they were asked during variety shows. It was a bit like playing pretend as a child; getting all immersed into this alternate universe where what you really wanted was a reality and that happy endings existed. In this case, what Donghae deluded himself to believe was that two men could fall in love and live a happy life together. What he failed to remember about playing pretend is that it almost always leads to heartbreak when you inevitably realize that your reality still sucks and this whole time you’ve just been teasing yourself with happiness that could never be yours.
Our memories
Well, they can be inviting
But some are altogether
Mighty frightening
As we die, both you and I
With my head in my hands I sit and cry He can feel Hyukjae struggling for words, and he starts laughing hysterically. The laughter wracks through his body before he realizes that he has stopped laughing and started sobbing in earnest. He can sense the regret coming off in waves from the other man and stiffens, not willing to accept any more pity. He rolls over on the bed, covertly using his blanket to wipe the moisture away from his face before rolling up and off the bed. He takes shaky steps towards the bathroom and heads to the sink to wash his face. When he feels the hesitant hand on his shoulder, he wants to turn around and punch Eunhyuk in the face and keep punching him until he stops being this weird, awkward grown up and turns back into his best friend.
Don't speak I know just what you're saying
So please stop explaining
Don't tell me cause it hurts (no, no, no)
Don't speak I know what you're thinking
I don't need your reasons
Don't tell me cause it hurts
It's all ending
I gotta stop pretending who we are...
You and me
I can see us dying...are we? He walks back towards his bed and lies down, blatantly ignoring Eunhyuk’s attempts to talk to him. He pats the bed next to him, not because he particularly wants company, but more so because he wants to see what Eunhyuk will do next. He regrets it almost instantaneously even though he knew that he would get the kind of response that he does; that one moment of hesitation, the brief look of doubt that flashes over Eunhyuk’s features tells him all he needs to know.
It doesn’t matter that a second later, Eunhyuk flops down on the bed bedside him. All that matters is that one moment of hesitation, that one moment of uncertainty that was never there before. Before this all, Eunhyuk never had to stop himself from doing anything related to Donghae. He had never hesitated to flop down on the bed, uncomfortably close to Donghae, or to keep chattering through the whole night without worrying about how tired they would both be in the morning. It doesn’t matter now that Eunhyuk is still willing to lie beside him. Now all that Donghae can feel is the awkwardness and the silence and the distance between them and he can’t help but wish that he had never attempted to kiss Eunhyuk in the first place. He would have been happier deluding himself with what could be rather than being forced to face the reality that Eunhyuk didn’t love him and never would.
Don't speak,
Don't speak,
Don't speak
oh I know what you're thinking
And I don't need your reasons
I know you're good, I know you're good, I know you're real good
Oh, la la la la la la La la la la la la
Don't, Don't, uh-huh
Hush, hush darlin'
Hush,hush darlin'
Hush, hush
don't tell me tell me cause it hurts
Hush, hush darlin'
Hush, hush darlin'
Hush, hush
don't tell me tell me cause it hurts
